There is a comprehensive help page giving tips on how to find numbers in the form of
Guide to finding geographical numbers in the
Site Related section. However, there is a lot to take in there, so below is a summary of what you need to know and do.
This gives information on the steps you should carry out
before posting here. What information you should include in a request is listed below in blue.
Check the Database Check for alternative numbers listed in Say no to 0870's database by clicking
Search to find an alternative number on the home page. From there you can either search by company name or phone number. Usually searching by company name is best, as some companies operate many 084/087 numbers and the same geographical(s) may be a suitable alternative(s) to the number you're looking for.
Numbers in the top table (entitled
Main Database) have been verified by us. Those in the table with the blue background have not been verified. That said, there is always the possibility that numbers change anyway and the best way to report incorrect numbers, whether verified or unverified, is to post a message in the
Geographical Requests section of the forum.
Search the Internet Many numbers are found by searching the internet using search engines like Google, and not by someone who happens to know the number. You can search the internet, some tips are in the link above.
Search the Forum If you wish to make a request on the forum, please use the search facilities to see if the organisation has been talked about before. Select
Search Forums at the top of the page.
You may find these tips useful when searching:
- In the Search for box, enter the company name. It's best to start off with one word, and enter alternative or extra words if you get too many results.
- Select Any poster in the By User list. This will search for posts by un-registered or guest members, as well as registered users.
- Normally it searches messages as well as subject titles. Uncheck the Message box under Fields to Search.
- This post was made in the last is normally set to one year. Select (all posts).
- Tick the Display only one result per thread? if you get too many results.
Make a Request on the Forum When you do make a request in the forum, please supply as much information as you have. Make the title of the thread the organisation/company's name.
Basic details (such as address with postcode, department and website) are essential if you have them, but sometimes only the non-geographical number is supplied. This is to assist in searching on the internet, and no information makes that searching very difficult! Those trying to find the number have to do some spadework which the requestor should have done. These techniques are detailed in the link to the Guide to finding geographical numbers, above.
Who? What? Where? Why?
- Who is the company?
- What is the nature of your call? Customer services, complaints, new business etc.
- Where is the company based? A full address is always useful.
- Why do you want to contact them?
Please answer as many of these questions as possible; some may not be applicable to your request. Please remember that most numbers are found by members of this site using their own time to look on the internet, and the courtesy of posting information and coming back and saying thanks goes a long way. Posting just a non-geographical number and company is considered rude. Please use the same manners you would do if you were talking to people face to face.
