National Insurance Contributions/Pensions
Reply #6 - Jan 15th, 2007 at 11:32am

Hi, can anyone help please?    The number in the database for National Insurance of 0191 2135000 is not recognised when dialled.   As it is in the database as covering most of this vast department, does anyone have another geo number to try?   Also does anyone have a geo no for the Retirement Pension Forecasting Team, Room TB001, Tyneview Park, Whitley Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE98 1BA, tel 0845 3000168 - (cannot find anything in database)?   Thank you, any help gratefully received.

Just called tha number, 0191 2135000. and was answered , "HM Revenue and Customs can I help" so the number does work.

I have joined the threads on National Insurance Contributions Office. The OP quotes 0191 2256914 which is one of the numbers derrick has listed in the previous post.

Thanks for that everyone.    On the 0191 2135000 number, they did answer but merely referred my husband to 0845 3021479, saying they couldn't put him through from the switchboard!   He then used 0191 2256914 & that did work & the person answering was able to deal with his questions immediately.

This 0191 number is listed in our database under two entries. One is for the 0845 you quote and both mention "NI Contributions" in the Other Info field. Indeed, if you enter ni contributions in the company search box several other similar numbers come up.

I rang the NI today using 0191 213 5000 ... the switchboard said they couldn't put me through, and referred me to the 0845 number; but, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told about thirty seconds later that the supervisor had given them the go-ahead to put me through ...

So, "I can't put you through" suddenly morphs into, "I've been told to LIE TO YOU and say I can't put you through - but I can really."

Aren't public services truly wonderful under Nu Labour?

If you look at the HMRC website they give "international" alternatives for the 0845 numbers of all tax offices here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals/international-e-l.htm

All you have to do is replace "+44" with "0".

I tried the above to my local Income Tax Office on my landline and got past the recorded message, but a person then put the phone down on me  Sad   Not to be deterred, I tried (for the sake of it) the geographical number again using my mobile, and sure enough, they took the call.   It looks like they are call screening so its a good idea to dial 141 first.

I would ask our ex-patriot friends to also dial 141 so the Revenue do not know where the call is coming from  Grin

But that is the whole point, donquixote. If caller ID works across international boundaries (and that is a complex, vexed and inconsistent issue), then the called party will effectively see that the call is from overseas by the caller ID. If not, then it will appear as 'private number' - or some such other non-identification code.

For example, if I get a call from the UK (to the US), when caller ID works, I will see 447984xxxxxx or from Australia 6189232xxxx. The first numbers immediately tell me it is from the UK (+44) or from Australia (+61).

The Tax Office would see the same, I guess - 1930555xxxx from the US, for example.

We have no need to try and "fool" the system. It is designed for us! (And I doubt if we could, anyway)

The saving grace is the fact that it is NOT consistent, so 'Private caller' could be an overseas caller or an internal UK caller who has dialled 141 as a prefix. They have no way of knowing and so must answer the call.

Keep the b******ds guessing, I say.....!    Wink
