In the current issue of New Scientist they are advertising an event called New Scientist Live. Ticket bookings at website or on 0844 581 1295. This is an allowable use of 0844 but there is no indication of charges, something that has been required since July 2015.
The underlying offender is Ticket Factory:
https://www.theticketfactory.com/newscientistlive/online/Clicking the "contact us" link leads to this page where the charges are correctly given:
https://www.theticketfactory.com/newscientistlive/online/default.asp?doWork::WSc...They are also correctly using an 03 number for queries. They are probably offending against the disability discrimination legislation by using an 0844 number for those who have specific needs due to diability.
I have written to New Scientist as follows:
Quote:In issue 3071 on p21 you are showing 0844 581 1295 as the number for ticket purchase for New Scientist Live. Since July 2015 it has been a requirement that whenever such 084x and 087x numbers are used they must be accompanied by a statement of the form: Calls cost XXp/min service charge plus your phone company's access charge.
http://www.fairtelecoms.org.uk/uk-calling-clear-call-rates.htmlThe 0844 number you are using actually belongs to the Ticket Factory but that is no excuse. The advertisement is branded New Scientist and you are the publisher.
The use of such phone numbers is allowed for sales lines but is unethical and casts New Scientist in a bad light.
I have also mentioned this in the saynoto0870 forum which has a wide readership:
