Firstly I love this and MSE site. I tried to call the landline number for Halifax with a mortgage enquiry. The operator would only give me the 0845 number and would not connect. How's that for poor service? I was a little taken aback to argue. What do others do when facing this?

I had this problem. If you go onto their website you can get them to phone you back by selecting the "phone back" option in the morgage section. This way they have to pay for the price of the call!

Send them a complaint by email. If you don't complain they will never change to a normal geographical number.

Or better still, get your own 0870 or 0871 number for private use, and get them to call that, instead of your landline, or indeed your mobile which costs more to call during office hours!!

This...I really like! Don't suppose you know the cost of getting an 0870 number? I'm going to do as previous poster suggested and get them to call me via website and I'll use my mobile as a contact number. ;)
