I am under the impression that it is cheaper to dial 0845 numbers rather than a lomg distance geographic number. Am I wrong?

Yes, you are wrong.

Alot of the time (depending on operator/tariff) they cost more to call than 'normal' geographical numbers. See What's the 0845/0870 rip-off all about? for more information.

Very very wrong, particularly if you use a lowest cost carrier like 18866 for geographic numbers!
