Received call from this number to my landline: 0871 692 0396. As soon as I picked up, the line went “dead”. Could this be a scam; i.e. if I were to return call to this – no doubt – high call rate number, would I expect to be listening to sales type speak, whilst running up a huge bill? the number is not on the database. Any ideas?

A 0871 is a Premium Rate Service (PRS) number and it is illegal to present such a number on a caller display. Don't call it back; just ignore it.

The 0871 692 rangeholder is O-Bit Telecom which is a part of Daisy Group. Other numbers within its ranges have been reported as being used for presentation on caller displays, usually as missed calls:
