Heard Martin on Radio 2 the other day. Have been looking for a site like this for ages. Thank you. It is the principle involved with all these companies charging you to talk to them, especially when i get all local and national calls free for £9.95 a month. Why should we get ripped off? Will add numbers to the list as soon as I find some!

And now there's over 3000, and rising every day!!

So thats a 3 fold increase in 6 months.

And with all the publicity this site gets, then the more people will have a look, and the more people will realise how much they get ripped off with 0870 numbers.

The only draw back to this is that when companies realise their geographical number was obtained from here they're going to purposely change their geographical which would then make it next to impossible to obtain their new geographical.

Yes, I seem to recall someone from the DVLA joining this site, saying how calling the geo number is causing a headache for them.

Also, Sky changed their number because of that same reason.

We're not after a free lunch here.  We only want to pay the same price for calling an insurance company, and bank, as for calling your friends and family.

Most of the very large companies, such as Sky, or Barclaycard know exactly what they're doing with 0870.

However people from smaller companies have come on here, or replied to some of our members, that they thought 0870 was a normal rate call, and only used it cos their telco told them that having an 0870 number makes a company look more professional, and quite willingly give their geo number when asked.

The more bad publicity is given to these numbers, the more likely that companies on geo numbers will want to stay, and that some of the current worse offenders will start to jump on the bandwagon and having their new geo number as a selling point.

Just remember, it was only a few years ago when only a handful of companies offered 0% credit cards, Flexible mortgages/loans, decent interest of current accounts.

History would show, that after one company does heavy marketing and poaches customers, other companies fight back.  Alliance and Leicester are making a big thing at the moment about their call centre being in the UK instead of India.  Next year they might change their policy of expecting us to call them on 0870/0845 numbers, and make a big thing about it.

Title: Re: Thank You
Post by Cruz on Jul 22nd, 2005 at 8:47pm
An argument such as the below companies make it cheaper to call India than Alliance & Leicester's 0870 numbers?

Dialwise - 3p/min - (08444394646)

Abroadtel - 4p/min - (08443990004)

CheapestCalls - 5p/min - (08445662525)

Telesavers - 6p/min - (08717542424)

Telestunt - 7p/min - (08717727979)

1899 - 7p/min

Having been given the web address for this site via webuser. I can't believe how ignorant I was. I assumend (as probably must of the rest of the country does that the numbers given to us by companies are the only ones available. Untill the website is known to more and more people then these companies will carry on making more and more money from poor unsuspecting people.
I was shocked when I came onto this site and found that all the companies that had been 0870 and 0845 also had geographical numbers. I was especially amused to find that my bank (HSBC) customer and internet service numbers were for Barnsley. Guess where I live :) This means that I will be saving at least £4 a quarter on my phone bill just from using this number alone.
I can't thank you enough for this site as it is not only helping me but through word of mouth I am also spreading the news of this website.
Hopefully overtime when companies realise that they are not making as much money as they thought that they will reliase why and strart doing the decent thing and given out the geographical or even (though this is just lucy in the sky) free phone numbers.
Until that happens I will spread the word of this site to all who complain about extortion with regards to 0870/0845 numbers.
Long live this site and may it help educate not only the ignorant but companies that soon we will not be pushovers.

Yes and we are glad that we can all help one and another.  Apart from checking the search facility here, you can often obtain a Geographic number by going to BT's on line Directory Services and selecting the 'Business' tab.  Often, Business's take on an 0845 or 0870 number but forget to inform Directory enquiries which still in a good number of cases feature the GN.
BT is at:-

We have just discovered this site! Incredible find and saved some dosh this moring by using a land line instead of the dreaded 0870.

We have a TalkTalk telephone and Broadband package and have saved money by swithching providers ie BTand Sky Talk. Have had no probs with TalkTalk to date and the switch was straight forward and prompt. Please note we do not work for Talktalk! Just satisfied (at the moment) customers.

Have passed this site onto our addresees.

Hi,

Found this site yesterday and just wanted to say that I wish I had found it a long time ago. I was getting so fed up with the many retailers that have mainly 0870 numbers to use. One example was that I bought a Hi-Fi unit as a main present for my son at Christmas which was faulty. It cost me approximately £8.00 in total call costs to arrange a replacement- 2nd was faulty as well!

On checking through my BT bill this website will save me a small fortune over time. I have even managed to find my mortgage company's geo number and freephone instead of 0870. This will be handy shortly when I negotiate a new deal just before my fixed mortgage period is due to end. I can really argue the point that loyal customers should have the same deals as new customers as the phone bill for me phoning them will be significantly reduced or if it works free ;D

I will make sure I tell as many people as possible about this site and add the alternative numbers to 0870 that I personally find.

Thanks for all the hard work in maintaining this site. See you soon.
S.

Ps: I hope I have posted this right-in the process of learning!

A brilliant site and one that will save me lots of wasted money on the ever increasing use of 0870 numbers.

I've just changed to Skype for my calls and the 0845-0870 calls can be expensive, but with the SAYNOTO0870.COM 'search for alternative number', my call costs will be even lower, in fact, so low I'll be pleased to buy you a drink.

So that's Skype for calls, try out of BT's light user scheme and the use of SAYNOTO0870.COM 'search for alternative number'.... this time next year, I'll be a millionaire  ;D

Post by floyd18 on Oct 17th, 2006 at 4:17pm
Hello, I have been using the site now for sometime, I am on an all inclusive telephone package, and this site has saved me literally hundreds of pounds, or more. I would like to thank the site owners and administrators, and say a big thank you to everyone who contributes numbers and information to the site. :)  I have never yet had a 0870 number that I have not found an alternative, and I have since been submitting numbers myself. This is an excellent and valued service. So many thanks. Regards Peter.

Thanks so much for this useful site.

I used to use it in the UK to avoid the call charges, but now I use it from Australia too - all my credit cards, banks, old service providers, etc etc - they all have 0870 numbers listed, but I can't ring those from down under.  But I can if I look them up on here, and so far they've all been listed!

Thanks again - you've saved me no end of hassle!

Cheers,

Will there be any special prize for the 10,000 member, perhaps we can have a whip round for a brand new 0871 number for them to keep? :)

Guess What

I am also from Barnsley and I have been using this fantastic site for a number of years now it is my belief that because Of Saynoto0870 providers such as Virgin are now offering none geographical numbers in their all inclusive packages.

I believe that this site has made a differance and because of the membership we will eventually either see an end to 08s or as virgin have done they will be a part of the all inclusive packages. It is not a solution because companies are still profateering but I think it is a step in the right direction. ;)

Fantastic site - well done!!

I've got Sky's phone service, unlimited geographic 01/02 calls for £5per month but they've just upped their tariff for 0870 numbers to 10p per min.

This site saves me a fortune.  Seems everyone these days wants you to ring their 0870 number.

Since finding this site I've been able to find an alternative for every 0870 number I need.

Thanks!

My first post here, but have been using your services for a year or two I think. Just wanted to pass on  my thanks to the person who had the original bright idea for this site, and to all those who have contributed numbers since it's inception!

You've saved me hard earned  dosh when trying to get sense out of SkyTV, and most recently, Saga insurances. Actually finding a 0800 for insurance renewals was a fantastic boon as the length of the call was, to say the least, lengthy!  ;)

Also, the free call numbers to OneTel for my renewal of my £5 per month call package means a lot too!

Thank you!

I would like to say a big thankyou for your site, it has helped me get through to Sky after trying the 08442 number and getting nowhere with a refund they owed me for nearly two weeks. As I only use a mobile phone it was costing me a fortune as I only get normal land line or mobile calls in with my contract. Today I tried a number someone has put on your website recently and would you believe it, I got through to installations at Sky after TWO rings and my money has been refunded!! Thanks for the support.

Remember that the site is about us all helping each other by sharing alternatives we find and exchanging thoughts on the subject of revenue sharing (covert premium) numbers.

If you find that database entries require updating, removing or verifying (unverified entries are shown at the bottom of the search results page on the blue table), then please post in the Geographical Requests section of the forum and I will make the necessary changes.

It's great to see the site growing all the time, and fighting the battle well with the utter greed from businesses and services we rely on. The cheeky, arrogant attitude some of them have when they know you've accessed an alternative number!!! It beggars belief...these people are meant to be your average working person who shouldn't be bothered that your avoiding the extra costs that shouldn't be there in the first place. Do let us know of any issues with numbers in the database or working numbers that are unverified that can be listed as verified. The database part of the site is a two way thing and relies on users to provide feedback so as to keep listings as accurate as possible.  :)

I am disabled, and rely on the internet / phone for all my shopping needs.
When I need to ring a company with a query I really resent being forced to ring those expensive numbers.
On my mobile I have Unlimited land line calls, but instead of ringing 08....etc I have been emailing the companies,
then having to wait days for a reply - it's so frustrating.

Since I joined this great site, I have managed to obtain geographical numbers for several companies,
and dialled them from my mobile - free of charge - yippee.

Keep up the good work all of you who manage the database!

Why can't the original contributor of an alternative number also be given a username and password on the site that would allow them to maintain and update that number/listing?

As the original contributor of a number is frequently aware when the geographic number alternative or the 084/7 number is altered this would surely greatly reduce the number maintenance burden for the forum's management and also keep the list of alternative numbers on the site more frequently and more accurately updated.

And by the way contrary to certain assertions of the forum moderator I do contribute new alternative numbers to this site and contributed two new ones only yesterday for Dewsbury Auto Salvage and A1 Jap Spares.

I have verified both these entries. I note that both these companies publish their 01 numbers on their web sites and that the 0871 numbers are only two digits apart, so it's likely that they were brought into service by an unconnected third party.

We know that restaurants in particular suffer from this where they are listed in restaurant guides, and it should not be mistaken that the organisations themselves opted to use rip-off numbers.

bbb_uk its certainly extremely good to hear from you again after all this time. [smiley=beer.gif]

You may well be right in what you say but as our esteemed forum owner Daniel now so rarely makes a post on the site any more its hard to be sure.  I do recall that in his last significant post on this website Daniel alluded to a whole bunch of site improvements he was working on although I'm not clear which if any of those were ever finally implemented?

Also it should not be forgotten that the introduction of the Unverified Numbers feature to the number listings actually occurred not long after my own suggestion that it was just not practically possible for the management team to have the necessary time required to verify all numbers submitted to the site and that many good number alternatives that members could be using were being lost in the then many months long wait for number verification.

...We're not after a free lunch here.  We only want to pay the same price for calling an insurance company, and bank, as for calling your friends and family.

Most of the very large companies, such as Sky, or Barclaycard know exactly what they're doing with 0870....

You can use the international number provided by many companies to avoid 0844s etc. such as +44 (0)1604 614 015 for Barclaycard http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/business/contact-us/  What they don't tell you until you ask is that as a retailer the PDQ machine that they supply to process customers' cards automatically dials a premium rate g6 number once a month to upgrade the software in it.  OK it may not amount to much, it is the principal.  I have raised a complaint about it >:(  They're not going to change the number (08448222015) with over 70,000 customers even @17p/33secs, that's nearly £12,000 which obviously, they can't afford to forego. ::)

Hear, hear.  Although I would say that it is also an "unfair contract term" as they do not give you any other choice of contract package in which you can pay more for the service but only have to use normal rate phone numbers in return.  ADT pull the same scam with my mother's burglar alarm by using an 0871 number for any alarm activation calls dialled by the alarm unit.  But if she had a choice would she have agreed to the use of an 0871 number - no of course not.  In other words a scam because most people are still not even aware that 0844 and 0871 numbers are premium rate phone numbers (as defined by the dictionary regardless of what Ofcom or PhonePayPlus may claim).

What is needed with these jokers like Barclaycard is for a whole group of customers to take a class action law suit against them.  But because the individual sums of money from the calls are relatively small even though the total amount of revenue share earned by Barclaycard is very large unfortunately nobody seems willing to take the risk of legal action.

I came to know about this site when Martin Lewis wrote about it a few years ago.
Since then I have been an occasional visitor and each time it has saved me money, sometimes quite a lot of money.

Thanks for all your hard work and that of your contributors.

Keep up the good work

Regards

John

It's now 2021, and it has been some time since anyone posted a thanks...

I for one still use Saynoto0870 periodically, and still find it a most useful resource.

I would like to thank the site administrators for maintaining such a helpful website.
