I agree - They are very good.  Their rate for 0870 numbers is 7p/min though.

Thanks
Daniel

Has anyone used them?

I am reluctant to give authority for unlimited withdrawals from my credit debit cards. Are there any safeguards?

I've used call18866 for a couple of months ... the enduring Credit Card authority is quite normal and this company seem fine. Their rates are second to none.  :)Even managed to call Thailand for 1p / minute! Shame they charge fairly standard rates for 0845 and 0870 numbers. The first company to offer these at standard rates will get one hell of a lot of business. Dis-satisfaction with companies using these numbers is spreading. I have recently cancelled an insurance policy on the strength of this! Voting with your feet is the only sensible action .... just be sure to let the company know WHY. Maybe if they realise they are losing business things will change!

Dave,
Thanks for this info - I may give them a try. The trouble is that I am on the One Tel total UK calls(all no charge except NGN/mobile etc) package and I would only use 18866 for overseas calls which might only be a few pence per month. It hardly seems worth their while to process a Visa payment for such a small sum.

Totally agree with your comments about NGNs and the firms using them.

By the way I am going to post a thread about a problem I have found with One Tel regarding NGNs.

Robert

1899.com as advertised on this website  is pretty obviously the same company as call18866.co.uk. Their newsletter registration is identical etc.

Does anyone know how to contact the firm?

Hi Robert,

To keep their costs down they don't have a call centre that deal with enquiries.  All enquiries are dealt with via their website.

Just click on the banner to take you to their site, and click on the 'Contact Customer Services' link at the left hand side of the site.

It may take them a while to get back to you, but they will do.

If it is a general enquiry, you can always ask it on here, as others can try and help.

Thanks
Daniel

Just found out (when I used them!) that 18866 is now only .5 p per minute plus 1p connection.
I did try and get info about 1899 and 18866 by using their e-mail support service - I am still waiting for any replies - some 5 weeks after enquiring!

Info is available on the rates from Magsys (as of 26th May) for both 18866 and 1899, but you only had to ask and we would have told you !   ;)   Then you wouldn't have had to wait over 5 weeks for a reply,  or you only had to check the for latest rates on the 18866 and 1899 websites !  ::)

Because 18866 only charge 1p connection plus their revised rates, I have just switched from 1899.  ;D  It seems that I'd do anything to save 2p !!

mmmmmmmmmmm!
a touch sad that the Magsys site shows 18866 as 1p per minute when it is actually .5p per minute.
A comparison site with inaccurate information doesn't really cut the mustard is, I believe, the expression!
A big change - 50% reduction, should herald an update urgently.
I was fully aware of the call costs of the two companies, what I was trying to find out was the ownership information - as the common belief is that they are both operated by the same parent company, and whether plans were in place for 18866 to match the prices at 1899. Obviously this latest move of 18866 to .5p is a result.
But you still have to wonder why a company would operate two such similar (look at the web site designs!) subsidiaries! That is the question you could answer for me!

This is an intereting thread!!

Does anyone know if 18866 do Carrier Pre Select or not. I am with Onetel at the mo and was shocked at the price of NGN's when I received my recent bill. I hate nasty surprises.

Do they also have a mobile access number that is geographical as I use the 3 network and 0800 numbers are chargeable.

Im itching to change providers with these rates!!!

I said the last update was 25th May & information was correct then; you make the comparisons  :-X
I think you'll agree, updating 10 x/year is a big enough task with over 116 providers !
What more do you want from a FREE site ?  STOP whingeing and start supporting it instead  >:(
:o Even 18866 showed different prices on the main page to those following for two days :o
Try looking at info at the top of the 18866 T&C and the 1899 T&C pages to confirm your suspicions.

Look at the top of the page on the Magsys Telco list to see who supports CPS or not. It's also answered on 18866 FAQ's page.
They only have 0808 1707788 for mobile/cable callers but a good question that I also am interested in. I shall root around & see what I can find for us.

Magic om !

Yes, we know; Daniel keeps pointing out to us that 1899 charge .5p/minute (+3p connection) (Note: They're the same company by the way) so there's no need to have kittens over 18866 suddenly doing the same. Don't ask me what 18866 are playing at undercharging 1899 (themselves).     There's logic in it somewhere.

A point to note is 18866 have NO MINIMUM CHARGE; their rates information states ". . rates are in pence per minute. Calls are billed per second rounded to the nearest penny, include VAT and are subject to a 1p CONNECTION FEE".
The minimum you'd expect to pay for a call under one minute is 0.5p + 1p, probably rounded up to the nearest penny, so 2p total.

Overall it is looking to be a pretty good service, but I'll let you know after I've been with them a few months or more. So settle down and take another pill . . .

Signed up with 18866 October 2003 - as I've had massive bills from BT for years - lots of calls to USA and Europe.

Result: PHENOMENAL SAVINGS.

Credit card debited each month for calls made.

Upon sign up I made a "Log Document" - lined up a pad with columns:  date/time/called/duration/cost.

Just wanted to check out that my figures were kinda' tallying with theirs.   (This of course is not 100% accurage if you live with other people - especially teenagers - who of course don't log anything).....ggggrrrr.
Figures tallied well enough.

The above is the good news.

Now the first badd'ish news:

3 days ago - as I tried to make one of my usual calls to the USA for a "gab session" - I was informed by "The Voice" that I had to sign up to 18866 before I could make a call - my phone number was not recognized.......blah blah blah.

Oh darn it.   I onto the website - "Report a fault" filled in 3 times.   Told that they have a "small team" so things might take a while.............but have no fear their techies were aware and things would more often than not be sorted without any e-mail exchange.

Well, that was 4 days ago - and despite 3 more increasingly narky "fault reports" from moi - my fone number is still not being "recognised"/nor have I had any response from the "Small Team"..............who may well have left the country by now.

Funny thing is that I can still call use 18866 - dial a European number - great - but the female voice bellows on in the background saying my number hasn't been recognised.   This kinda' spoils the call.

This is when the system breaks down of course.........no "yuman bean" to talk to..........and the "Small Team" being too small to be of any practical use.

I've just contacted BT via the Web - and apparently they have detected some kinda' fault in the local exchange.............now waiting for their engineer.

Life's great ain't it when everything is working.

Happy calling.

I'm not 100% sure, but Call18866's website is now showing the UK rate back at 1p/min (apart from the splash screen).

Maybe, they are reverting back to their 1p/min rate ???

I did mention in my previous posting that

Actually I have been trying to get access to both the 18866.co.uk & .com sites since early this morning (15th), and both are still down !  I used the phone earlier today & that was working OK.
I think someone is maybe having server problems.

16.06.2004: The call18866.com site seems Ok now except (as Daniel said) the splash page shows .5p/min while the rates page has 1p/min, even though it says it was updated on 16.6.04. And according to my bill, I was definitely charged @.5p/min yesterday evening !  :-/

Have successfully used 18866 today - the voice definitely said 0.5p per minute, and a quick look at their site shows UK landline calls as 0.5p too! :)
Hopefully problems sorted - I guess they are having to deal with so much business now that even more of us Money Savers are jumping in! :D

Yes I can confirm that both the .Com & .Co.Uk sites are back up and rates pages correctly updated as of today.

The rates are definitely better than most others, though as we've seen with the search for a cheaper Uruguay provider, they don't cater for everyone.

I've found 18866 great for the few weeks I've been using them.  Calls within the UK have aleays been 1/2p per minute when I've made them.  They do mention on the website that the price you will actually pay is the price you hear on the line when you make the call (plus the 1p connection charge of course).

No, they don't do Carrier Pre Select so you have to pre-dial 18866 on every call, which is a bit of a pain, but other than that they're great.  And I can call Japan for 1p per minute!

hi
i am very interested in using 18866 because of their 10p rate to orange mobiles. basically when i leave my home i divert my calls from my bt landline to my orange mobile.
would the 18866 service work if i put their number in before my orange number on call divert??
if not is there another service that would work with call divert??
thanks
charlie
