I remember that someone I was involved with was giving free 0870 numbers away quite some time ago, but I've not got his name to hand. I'll have a root around & if I come across it I will repost the info for you.   :-/

As 0870, 0845 and 0800 are attached to live lines, as this site shows, you can call the standard Geographic number if you can find it. Therefore you can have your friends call you on the Geo number and give the Non-Geo to the people you don't like. Just hope they don't talk to someone else who knows the Geo number !!  ;D

As you will find by looking around at the providers, you'll only get anything back on it if you have a high enough call volume (lots & lots !!) so don't get your hopes up.   ::)

Or better still, provide an 090 number to companies who operate on 0870.

100% free 0845 & 0870 numbers.

I've just signed up for an 0870 number (and it's 100% FREE), which I can now use to bombard every 'business' who I have dealings with and who refuse to provide me with an alternative to their premium numbers.

You can choose you own number from a list of free numbers or go mad and pay a one-off fee of £5 for one of their more memorable numbers.

For more information (and to get your free number!) visit RoboTelecom

Most of the 0870 providers I've found say the numbers are only for businesses, not for domestic numbers. Is there any reason for this, and is this an official policy concerning 0870 numbers? Or is it just because domestic customers probably wouldn't generate so much revenue?

Title: Premium Rate the Premium Raters
Post by RBJ on Jul 29th, 2004 at 10:33am
What a wonderful thought. Premium rate the premium raters. Imagine if we all did this!

I could just put them on hold for a while and let the meter run.

And anyone who cold calls me could be asked to call back on the 0870 number. Delicious!

I'm very tempted to get on on my business an give it to anyone who refuses to give me a geographical number.

Only problem is diverting the 0870 to home when I'm not at work. One supplier quotesI "you can simply change the landline number that your 0870 number(s) point to online, using our Client manager. Number redirections usually take a few working hours"

Although they say no minimum usage they reserve the right to disconnect numbers if "not used".

Has anyone actually done this?

I did have an 0845 number routed to my home phone for no charge whatsoever and with a revenue share of 0.3 ppm.  This was in the days when it was cheaper for my friends and family to call me on the 0845 number than for them to make a national call (before BT Together etc).  Now, no-one uses it.

I might try to get an 0870 number, though (not for friends and family to use).

Failing that you could have a 070 personal number. Some charge nearly 50p/min  :o :o :o

Title: Ive Got One
Post by RBJ on Aug 5th, 2004 at 2:35pm
After reading the input on this thread I've decided to take the plunge.

I'm now the proud owner of a premium rate 0870 number routed to my business phone. It will be given as a contact number to anyone who refuses to give me a geographic or free number.

Also anyone who cold calls will be asked to call back on the 0870 number. Interestingly, just had one call asking for the managing director. Gave him the number but he didn't call back. This is a real win win. If they don't call back that's fine and if they do the meter is running.

Cheers

Title: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by Shiggaddi on Aug 14th, 2004 at 3:24pm
I looked at one of the google adverts from this very site, and found that you can have your own 0871 number paying 3p days, 3.5p evenings, 4p weekends.  There's no set up costs or monthly fees.

Might sound like a good idea, to give this out whenever you give permission for companies to bombard you with phone calls, or when you subscribe to new banking, insurance, or services with large companies.

Has anyone actually got their own back with large companies.  It would be nice to get a call from my credit card company asking if I want payment protection, and get paid for the inconvenience!!

Any experience of large companies actually ringing back on these numbers, and any stories of people making a profit to get their own back.

I frequently give out an 0870 or 0871 number as my contact to insurance companies, banks, solicitors and even BT. I've earned around £120 over the last few months in the rebates payable on them.

Well worth it

Tony, what provider have you got your NGNs from?

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by Shiggaddi on Oct 11th, 2004 at 4:59pm
I have now got my own 0871 number.  Their minimum payout is only £5, so ideal for low useage.

Also, I believe you can't call 0871 numbers from abroad, so hopefully once it's fully circulated with all the large companies I deal with, I might not get calls from India asking for payment protection on my credit card.  Also, if call centres are unable to call me, then if it's that important they can write to me instead.

The company I used was www.thenumbercompany.co.uk

Their rates are 3.75 (day) 4.25 (evenings) 4.75 (weekends)

Also their 0870 rates are 3p minute (days only) and no rebate for evenings and weekends.

There's no set up costs, or rental costs.

I've had no problems so far, but I've only been using them about a week.  I've tested the number a couple of times on my mobile (but not answered) and it works fine.

Also, I've been shopping around for car insurance, and of course submitted the 0871 number as my home number, and a few companies wanted to call me back to get me a better deal than the online quote!! (and put a couple of pence in my pocket at the same time!!)

My number was set up very quickly, so just hope things run well with them in the future.

I have been giving out 0870 numbers to these companies for a few years now, and then when the 0871 number became free to set up / run, I got one of those numbers too.

The UK Number shop are now paying: 3.5p per peak minute - 4p per off-peak minute - 5p per weekend minute on the 0871 numbers!

When you sign up just ensure to use your name in the Company Name section, unless you have a company name obviously!

Post by Shiggaddi on Nov 9th, 2004 at 7:04pm
I tried that company as my first port of call.  I did put my name in the company section, however they rejected my application, because I was not a business, and they don't allow residential customers to connect.

I then explained my situation, that I'm using it to give to insurance, banks etc, and they thanked me for my explaination, and just suggested that I use google to find a service that allows residential customers to connect numbers.

I can recommend UK2Numbers. I was referred by one of their resellers on this thread. I got a free 0870! The require a minimum usage of 30 minutes per month, but I don't have to make a minimum. It was up and running in about 15 minutes.

Their customer service email is quick. It usually takes 10 minutes at the most for a reply. I even got a reply after 10pm at night!

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by Shiggaddi on Nov 27th, 2004 at 12:26pm
Yes, I did look into getting a premium rate number.

There are alot more rules governing the number though.

You need to buy recording equipment, and register the fact that you operate a "premium rate service" and you also need to make a bond payment to ICSTIS.

It is possible to get a premium rate number from another company, and officially "work for them" with them doing the recording, and already having paid the bond.

However, in order for the number to work, the company will provide you with a short intro prior to the call being connected, stating that the call is recorded, and the cost of the call, and queueing is prohibited on 090 numbers, and a delay in answering the phone, ie no 1571, and leaving the phone ringing is in breach of those rules.

Also, I think there's rules regarding "live" or "recorded"  Getting the 1571 all the time when you're paying for a "live" service could cause complaints.

And some call centres have premium rate barring, and some even have 0870 barring, and Indian call centres probably can't call non geographic numbers abroad anyway!!  Good way to get rid of them, lol!!

Me to, I have just got my own 0871 number, not used it yet but how do you find out how much you've earnt or what calls came in via the number and how do they pay out as they did not require my bank details.
Do they send an email for username ect;

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by copperbean on Nov 28th, 2004 at 9:31pm
To find out how much you have earnt, depends upon your provider.  Some have online access and others send you a monthly statement.

The provider does not normally require your bank details.  The common practice is that to obtain your money, you invoice the company for the amount you are owed, based upon your statement.  Companies then normally send you a cheque.  Most companies impose a minimum refund amount to keep costs down.  This may vary from £25 to £300.  Some companies pay no rebate whatsoever if you do not receive enough income.

You package is unlikely to include details of the source of incoming calls as standard.  Normally you will have to take out a secondary call registration package.

Obviously each provider is different, so you may want to check with yours, what their policies and extras are.

If you need any further help, please contact me.  I must advise you that I am a supplier of NGN's, and as such am familiar with the deals offered by other comapnies, and would be pleased to tell you what I can offer you.

How do thenumbercompany.co.uk pay their customers?  When I looked on their website, they wanted me to set up a DD, even though my 0871 number would be free.

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number

You do not have to give a direct debit for 0871 numbers if you go to www.copperbean.co.uk and select telephony and order.  This will get you an 0871 for redirection to a 020 or 01 code landline in the UK.  Does not include mobiles.

thenumbercompany.co.uk seem to be the best financial deal for a "personal" 0871 number.

Only downside is that their £5/month minimum payment doesn't roll over, but with a minimum rebate of 3.75p/min (more in evening / at weekend), you've more chance of reaching it in the first place.

Have you had any problems dealing with them since you set it up? (do they pay up, basically?)

Have I got the wrong web site?!!! ::)

This site is supposed to be SAYNOTO0870.COM !!!!

I constantly got calls which ended as soon as I picked up the phone, regardless how many rings. If I did a 1471, it always came up with a 0870 number. I wasn't stupid enough to press 3.

I just wonder how many of those calls were made by the members here? even from Mr copperbean's customers? Well done Mr Copperbean - here is a free forum for you to do business.

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by copperbean on Feb 15th, 2005 at 8:17pm
The answer is none.

In simple terms, for the number to come up as 0871 the software at the exchange needs to be altered.  Not a service we provide.  Next time you dial 1471 and discover a 0870 type of number why not look it up using the free facilities on this website.  You might then discover which company is trying to call you.  As a number of companies and government agencies use ngn's they could be calling you for a number of reasons.  Yes, it may be a sales call, but then again it might also be your bank letting you know that your account is overdrawn giving you the opportunity to correct it and save overdraft fees.  Believe it or not some banks do that.

As for business forum, not really.  Around five customers have signed upto my telecoms service since my first post many months ago.  Total revenue from these customers so far, less than the cost of a 2nd class stamp.  I suspect many more have signed up to numbers via the adverts on this website, the revenue from the adds contributing to the running costs of this website.  Likewise, why not check out our links at http://www.copperbean.co.uk

Finally, prehaps I could point out the obvious to everyone.  It costs money for the companies to call you.  No one could seriously make money on the basis that they hope to receive a call back after you use a 1471 service, particually as many companies also allow you to contact them for free via their websites.

Thanks

Mr Copperbean,

The reason why i come to this forum is simple: Say NO to 0870.

So NO! I am not going to find out who was calling me and why it hanged up as soon I answered the calls.

I am surprised that you are not banned from this forum yet.

It's so people like myself can have such a number, and use it to get back at these companies, which I have been doing so for many years.

Caroboy,

The forum title is Get your own 0871/0870 number.  If you have no interest in this particular forum why contribute?  To suggest that I should be banned for positivly contributing to the forum title, is a bit strong.
Whats the point of a discussion forum without a discussion?

My suggestion to you that you should use this website to findout what company is calling you is still valid as it then allows you to use free email once you have identified a company so you can spell out your objections to them using NGNs.

Regards

Let me repeat, the point is very simple: Say No to 0870 !

I don't care whether you are driven by greed, gripe or whatever reasons you can think of.

You are just helping those ngn providers. by the way how much do you pay them monthly? and what kind of cut do they get?  do i really care? not at all  thank you.

yes indeed this thread should have been edited/deleted in the first place.

the reason why I said you should be banned is that you have constantly advertised your own business here. According to the site owner, he had tried to stop those google ads but it was beyond his control.  That's why i am surprised that you are still here advertising your business. both your and boxtech's signature tells me a lot.

Well I think it is interesting; especially the remark from copperbean about the people here signing up with his service. Perhaps people's ideas of revenge by giving out such numbers to marketers, etc, are even more of a waste of time than I thought. I remarked to someone on another forum that you couldn't pay me 10p a minute, let alone a share of it, to receive such calls.

There are entirely legitimate uses of such numbers; using them from the included minutes on a mobile contract for international calls. I may sometime get an 0871 number that diverts to an international mobile; paradoxically this will make it cheaper to call from a landline.

Even premium rate numbers in some circumstances. One of the Daves is an IT support specialist. If I rang up for help, he wouldn't need to do a credit check, send a bill or worry about me not sending a cheque; completely automatic; what could be more convenient?

As for the ads, those can be interesting as well, without feeling tempted. Think of it as a chance to study the opposition; no foot-stamping needed to resist.

I found it incredible that all of you who criticise that the companies are making money on 0870 numbers are happy to give out 0870 numbers so that you can make money.

It is also funny, this forum that supposed to be against 0870 numbers also have adverts from Google that has companies which sell 0870 numbers.

I think all of you (good samaritans!!!) are hypocrits. Incidently, will this website owner disclose how much money they have earned from google adverts that explicitly direct customers to 0870 companies?

All of you are hypocrits!!!

sorry but were only giving out our 0870's to other companies that use them.
If every person in the uk did that theyd become useless as the company that uses them would be paying out more!

Title: Re: Get your own 0871/0870 number
Post by bbb_uk on Aug 4th, 2005 at 6:13am
I agree with mc661, my 0870 is provided only to companies using 0870/1 only as they make more money from us calling than the lower cost NGN's.  I haven't made a penny from it and I'm not bothered if I do or don't.  It comes in handy specifically for serial abusers of such numbers like CPW, Argos, Comet, etc where all of their contact numbers (bar one or two sales) are generally 0870.  If these companies went back to geographical I wouldn't hesitate to provide a geographical to them.

It actually costs money to run a website especially bandwidth costs that can increase as more people use the website.

Mr _C.

1.Not all members of this site have there own ngn numbers.
2.Those that do, as far as i am aware, only offer them to companies that use them themselves,to make a point.Little(Few Pence) or no revenue would be made from from them,as they would not recieve enough traffic.
3.If you could be bothered to have a look around the site and read some of the postings before jumping in the deep end,you will see why the ngn google ads appear.
4.The site does not sell advertising space to ngn providers, and they are not sponsoring it.

Can i take it you are a ngn provider or work for one?

The fact that you see 0870 as being a way to make money just shows how little you of the 084/087 rip-off you understand. The primary reason for me having an 0870 number is so that it costs companies more to call me, in the same way it costs me to call them.

Of course, if you're so proficient at running a website, and you are against 0870 numbers, maybe you would like to set up your own website.

These are the NGN numbers which I have,

0871 9 10 10 10 (which is extremly close to telestunt on 0871 9 99 10 10.
0871 9 10 10 11
0870 745 5067

These are only used when other big companies call me such as LTSB, dixons, etc. Oh and its used on any "call me back form" on a website such as abbey.

Good point, but I am not so sure. Most companies should be able to get their outgoing mobile costs down to 0870 levels.
And I think that I should prefer not to have my mobile number bandied around various companies, at least with the 0870 I have made the contact a little more distant.

Out of interest is there a residential version of the 25p business plan for calling mobiles?

I have just looked at the t & c 's of the 25p an hour business plan and found that it only applies to the 'big 4' mobile companies,  '3' and dolphin numbers are excluded.
Out of interest is there a residential version of the 25p business plan for calling mobiles?

Not that I know of. Ofcourse, you could get a 070 personal number, these will most probably be exempt from such 'discounts' in the same way that 084/087 is now.

As I said before, I don't see a big attraction in getting an 0871 number for revenge.

But I have an 0871 number that diverts to an international mobile at no cost to me (9p/min from BT), and also an 0844 number (like bigjohn's Paypal number) that also gets there via an American 760 area code; 2p to the caller, 7p to me, or a bit more if I change the routing. My O2 mobile can then divert to that 0844 from inclusive minutes.

So I don't feel like the hypocrite mentioned; I think that these numbers are very useful for better reasons.
