Title: Roaming service?
Post by jrawle on Sep 4th, 2004 at 8:04pm
All of the cheap services mentioned on the site are intended for use from a nominated landline or mobile. I'm interested in a service that I can use from any phone, accessed using a freephone number and a PIN.

I know there are very many phonecard services that do this, but they always expire a month after you start using the card, meaning you lose all the credit on the card. I'd prefer a service that billed me monthly for the calls I'd made.

Does anyone know of such a service? It'd be useful for calling from phoneboxes, and also from work / other people's phones.

I know for certain that OneTel provide this service, as I'm signed up for it, but I'm sure that others do likewise.

Mercury supplied this service at one time as did BT with Calling card, but let's be realistic and find a cheap provider.

What we need is a service like 18866 (with similar prices) that can be used from any non-registered phone  ::)

Does one exist ?

Have a look at http://www.ukcall.com/ukcallaround-land.asp.  Not the absolute cheapest and probably not for calling from a mobile, but it certainly gives you access from any landline at about 1.65p/minute.

Chick Lunchbox,

I forgot about that one - I used that service myself from my home phone before Call18866 came along a few years back.

Yes, I can confirm you can use it from any UK phone (non-registered) at 1.65p/min incl VAT.

Thanks
Daniel

This appears to be just what I'm looking for. Thanks very much!

If you've used the service before, is the sound quality OK? (At a guess, it's routing calls via the USA - having to add the 44 and calling the hash the "pound" key give it away.)

Also, is the freephone number available from BT phoneboxes?

I've only used it a few times, 18866 came along soon after Martin Lewis recommended UKcall at MSE.com.  I recall the sound quality as being no different to  anything else and there was no transatlantic delay or echo.

Yes, 0800 access from BT callboxes

I have made another post about the service available from www.80550.co.uk. Only good for international calls.

You can also have freephone access on 0800 594 6666 - some rates are different from the free access and the 020 7124 6666 access is cheaper from most telecom companies.
