Title: Help for Newbies
Post by mrscal on Mar 3rd, 2005 at 3:51pm
Am I alone in being confused?

At present I have what seems like a very expensive Talk Unlimited phone package with Telewest, plus Broadband Internet access. What is my best option for cheaper phone bills? I'd like to keep the broadband access as I use Skype a lot for free contact with overseas friends.

I've lookd at the tariffs on www.nowherenearthegarden.com/calls/

If I switch to Telewest Talk Weekends at £10.50 per month, how much will they charge for calling the 1899 number? Is it charged per minute? Would that be my best option?

Sorry to be so wet behind the ears but hope someone can help as I really need to cut down the phone bills.

Thanks

This is an excellent site but you'll find a lot more assistance by going to the (almost) 'sister' site the MoneySavingExpert.com site and asking the same question there.

Sorry to go on about Sipgate again.

But as you have a Telewest broadband connection, then you are in the ideal situation to get rid of your landline altogether.

You can get for free and no monthly cost a number from http://www.sipgate.co.uk , you can choose any area you like it doesn't have to be your own locality, you then make and receive calls using VoIP.

I would add this to 1899's VoIP service.

You can use software or hardware phone, or use an adaptor to enable a standard phone to connect.

There are many phones and adaptors to choose from, not just the few on Sipgates site.

With Sipgate you get a real telephone number, not yet available with Skype (Skype-In when launched).

You must be aware at the moment 999 service isn't currently available via Sipgate, so having a mobile available would be a good idea.

Being new to all of this I've never even heard of Skipgate or have no idea what VoIP is  but will look it all up and try it out.
Thanks for the ideas and your patience with those of us new to the game
