Well actually as far as I know NTL don't use 0870 numbers. It is actually free to call NTL customer services if you have a cable phone. I think they also have a freephone number too (Or they used to)

What I can understand though is why the guy did it. When I was an NTL customer I also regularly 'queued' 30 mins plus. A few times I was in a 'queue' for an hour and then they cut me off. Awful company to deal with and I think a buyout by Telewest would be the best thing to happen to them.
