Title: National Insurance Contributions/Pensions
Post by Barbara on Jan 15th, 2007 at 11:32am
Hi, can anyone help please?    The number in the database for National Insurance of 0191 2135000 is not recognised when dialled.   As it is in the database as covering most of this vast department, does anyone have another geo number to try?   Also does anyone have a geo no for the Retirement Pension Forecasting Team, Room TB001, Tyneview Park, Whitley Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE98 1BA, tel 0845 3000168 - (cannot find anything in database)?   Thank you, any help gratefully received.

Just called tha number, 0191 2135000. and was answered , "HM Revenue and Customs can I help" so the number does work.

020 77122171
0191 2187777, this is from overseas, ask for the local number.

0191 2256914
0191 2187585

I have joined the threads on National Insurance Contributions Office. The OP quotes 0191 2256914 which is one of the numbers derrick has listed in the previous post.

Thanks for that everyone.    On the 0191 2135000 number, they did answer but merely referred my husband to 0845 3021479, saying they couldn't put him through from the switchboard!   He then used 0191 2256914 & that did work & the person answering was able to deal with his questions immediately.

This 0191 number is listed in our database under two entries. One is for the 0845 you quote and both mention "NI Contributions" in the Other Info field. Indeed, if you enter ni contributions in the company search box several other similar numbers come up.

I rang the NI today using 0191 213 5000 ... the switchboard said they couldn't put me through, and referred me to the 0845 number; but, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told about thirty seconds later that the supervisor had given them the go-ahead to put me through ...

So, "I can't put you through" suddenly morphs into, "I've been told to LIE TO YOU and say I can't put you through - but I can really."

Aren't public services truly wonderful under Nu Labour?

If you look at the HMRC website they give "international" alternatives for the 0845 numbers of all tax offices here:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals/international-e-l.htm

All you have to do is replace "+44" with "0".

I tried the above to my local Income Tax Office on my landline and got past the recorded message, but a person then put the phone down on me  :(   Not to be deterred, I tried (for the sake of it) the geographical number again using my mobile, and sure enough, they took the call.   It looks like they are call screening so its a good idea to dial 141 first.

I would ask our ex-patriot friends to also dial 141 so the Revenue do not know where the call is coming from  ;D

But that is the whole point, donquixote. If caller ID works across international boundaries (and that is a complex, vexed and inconsistent issue), then the called party will effectively see that the call is from overseas by the caller ID. If not, then it will appear as 'private number' - or some such other non-identification code.

For example, if I get a call from the UK (to the US), when caller ID works, I will see 447984xxxxxx or from Australia 6189232xxxx. The first numbers immediately tell me it is from the UK (+44) or from Australia (+61).

The Tax Office would see the same, I guess - 1930555xxxx from the US, for example.

We have no need to try and "fool" the system. It is designed for us! (And I doubt if we could, anyway)

The saving grace is the fact that it is NOT consistent, so 'Private caller' could be an overseas caller or an internal UK caller who has dialled 141 as a prefix. They have no way of knowing and so must answer the call.

Keep the b******ds guessing, I say.....!    ;)

I can get numbers for NICO - all I need to know is a rough idea of why you want to contact them (given that there are several thousand people working there in various disparate business areas) and I will advise you of the appropriate number.

Obviously it may take me a day or two to check the site, respond, etc.

I am currently trying to get through to HM Revenue & Customs (National Insurance Contributions).

Their address is as follows:

National Insurance Contributions Office
Benton Park View
Newcastle upon Tyne
NE98 1NG

Their telephone number is: (0845) 915 5996 (I can see no fax number given).  Website is given as http://www.hmrc.gov.uk

There is an alternative number listed on your website:  (0191) 225 5996

I have tried the geographic number from my mobile, but it is engaged constantly - even out of office hours - so I don't think that is the right number somehow.

I'm a bit reluctant to do this online because:

a) I'd like to talk to a human being
b) someone might intercept my details &
c) I don't want or need them to know I have internet access (not permanently yet, anyway - not my PC)

Hope anybody can help, please?

There is an entry that says that numbers of the form 0845 91***** can be dialled using 0191 22*****. I don't know where that came from but that would explain the 0191 number.

If you search the database for ni contributions several other numbers come up. Perhaps one of those will work for you.

Thanks for your reply, Dave.   :)

I will have to try in the week and let you know how I get on.

P.S.  I have just tried the numbers in the list you suggested, and it looks like the (0191) 225 3002 number is a red herring as that is engaged.

Just because that 0845 isn't listed doesn't mean that the listed numbers aren't suitable alternatives.

Some organisations use different 0845/0870 numbers for the same department or purpose. Some might be slightly different, but the alternative number listed may be able to deal with your query.

You will have to try those 0191 numbers and report back which work for your query. That way we can add it to the list.

It's listed in the database as being a fax number.

You will have to try the numbers and see if they will deal with your enquiry. Then report back as to what you find to help others who are looking for the same thing.

It's trial and error!

Title: 0191 2256914 is NOT the Pensions Service
Post by Val53 on Jun 4th, 2008 at 12:13am
This is not an official HMRC post. I am a regular user of this website and I work in an area of HMRC receiving calls from customers who think they are phoning the Pensions service.  When we ask where they obtained the 0191 2256914 number, they confirm they've used this website.

An alternative number of 0191 2256914 is given on this site to the 0845 number for the Pension Service.  It is not the DWP Pension Service but it is HMRC National Insurance Contributions office and unfortunately we are not able to answer questions about Pensions.  Also there are only ever 3 or 4 phones open on that line during working hours.  The line is intended for customers of Individuals Caseworker who we have written to quoting our official number 0845 9156914 or if our own Contact Centre needs more specialist help.

0191 2256914 is also given on this site as an alternative to the NI helpline 0845 3021479. But again it is not an alternative number as there are only a few lines open and the NI helpline has a wider knowledge of NI matters that we don't deal with in Caseworker.
Hope this saves someone the frustration in getting through to the wrong area :)

I have removed the unverified entries for "Pension Service" which refer to this 0191 number.
