I have made a complaint to Trading Standards in Wilts about Virgin Mobile describing 0845 as a local call on thier website.They are taking it up.However they have taken advice from Ofcom about how these numbers should be described. Ofcom have advised them that

084 (up to 5p) should be called Basic Rate. and
087 (up to 10p) should be called Higher Rate.

This was new to me,can anyone confirm if its true.Is it written in stone. :)

It should be called "normal scam" and "Big scam"

Can anyone explain the Hollyoaks No Going Back (late night C4 this week) Recorded Information Line rate (re spiked drinks):-

0845 6 041 444 Calls cost maximum 6p per minute from BT Landlines, mobile and other networks rates may vary (my emboldening)

I mean if bigjohns news from Ofcom ?? is right 0845 isnt Basic Rate !!

Anybody care to comment ?

BJ,

Ask whom they spoke with at ofcom (and their email address if poss) because I believe ofcom's use of the word basic doesn't make clear the cost of the call.

Most consumers could well associate "basic" as being same normal geographical charges.

If you're too busy then PM me the email address of the ofcom person and I'll email them and ask for clarification and for them to look into this further.

Either way displaying the call charges like recommended by the non-broadcast side of the ASA is the only option that will ensure most consumers are actually aware of the costs of these calls (at least from a BT landline anyhow as it would be nearly impossible to display call costs from all other networks).
