Title: Norwich Trading standards
Post by derrick on Jan 19th, 2006 at 11:16am
I have just had to contact Norwich Trading Standards as I had a complaint re an 0870 number, I don't live in the area but the company I  am complaining about does,so my local TS have forwarded the complaint to them, but there is no one available, (all on a training day!),, but look what is on their website:-

Norfolk County Council
Trading Standards Department
County Hall
Martineau Lane
Norwich
Norfolk
NR1 2UD

t: 0844 8008013 (local rate) (08.00 -18.00 Mon - Fri)
f: 01603 222999
e: trading.standards@norfolk.gov.uk
w: http://tradingstandards.norfolk.gov.uk/

I have done the red highlight, now when the official body to complain about these numbers,(for certain complaints,i.e websites) break the rules and criminal law,(Consumer Protection Act 1987 (part III) what chance have we got.

BTW I did not use that number but an 01603 number.

Far from being local rate, that number costs 5p/min at all times!

See this FOI  thread about these numbers and lots more :  http://www.saynoto0870.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1121376454/10#10

Their Ofcom response is here http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/nts_forward/responses/mr/norfolk.pdf

Am I reading this correctly?

Norfolk Trading Standards respond to the Ofcom consultation saying,
Quote:
Ofcom has suggested at para. 4.18 that misleading advertising is currently a problem for 0845 and 0870 numbers. It should be noted that it is also a problem with 0844 and 0871 numbers, which are incorrectly described as 'local rate' or 'national rate' by some service providers. Similarly, service providers are often using the charge to BT customers as an indication of retail price for 0844/0871. This is also misleading, as some OCP's charges are higher.
and then does exactly that themselves by describing their own 0844 number at 'local rate' when it's 5p/minute at all times!

Incredible!

Incredible!

But, sadly, typical.

Surely one of our members in that beautiful county will, by now, have pointed out this glaring "Do as I say, not as I do" situation to Norfolk Trading Standards.
Whoever does should let us have their reply!!!
Update:-  Just visited the site again and appears all reference to "Local Rate" has been removed - there is now no description at all, just the 0844... number.

That's alright then.

Not.
