BTW, BT is the cheapest for such calls EXCEPT between 0600 and 1800 Monday to Friday - when [url=www.18185.co.uk[/url]]www.18185.co.uk[/url]'s charge of 4p connection and 4p per minute is far cheaper than BT for anything except a call of less than a minute.

The cost of 0870 from a BT landline is upto 7.51p/min (daytime) and is generally a little more expensive from other landline providers.  From mobiles, however, it can cost upto 40p/min.

Heinz, that price list is for only the few 0870 numbers that begin with what they have listed.

This acrobat format price list from BT (specifically page 27) states the calls cost:-

             Daytime      Evening         Weekend
0845    3.0ppm        1.0ppm          1.0ppm
0870    7.5ppm        3.7ppm          1.5ppm


Prices are in pence per minute (eg 7.5pence a minute for an daytime call to 0870).  As mentioned earlier, this is from a BT landline for customers on BT Together Tariffs (which is most customers).  Those calling from other landline providers generally cost a little more.  From mobiles it can cost upto 40ppm.

So today is Saturday and I want to phone an 0870 number I will be charged one and a half pence a minute which BT write as 1.50 a minute?

If, as I have said, www.18185.co.uk can charge £0.04 per minute between 06:00 and 18:00 Monday to Friday (i.e. peak times), do you seriously think that even rip off BT could charge £1.50 per minute at the weekend?

One last time.

BT charge BT Together Option 1, 2 & 3 customers £0.0751 per minute peak rate, £0.0375 per minute weekday evenings and £0.015 per minute at weekends to call MOST (but not all, see above) 0870 numbers.

That is correct, 1.5 pence per minute.

I'm as paranoid as all of us about avoiding 0870 numbers but sometimes it is inevitable when you are up against the likes of companies such as Sky (and others) who go to great lengths to prevent you accessing them via 0800 or geographical.  But I think it is worth remembering that calls to 0870 numbers made at the weekend are 1.5p/m via BT.  If you are not with BT and your call plan will charge you more, divert the call to BT via 1280.  I found these charges on their web site:

Remember 18185 is cheaper during the day (6am-6pm) in the week (Monday to Friday) at 4p/min plus a 4p connection charge.  ;)

You can of course only use the 1280 ovveride service to put your ngn calls through BT if your line rental is still with BT. Otherwise you are lumbered with your suppliers rates,unless you can use 18185.

It will be interesting to see how the Post Office charges various calls I have made using the BT 1280 override prefix on my first phone bill with them.  This includes various calls using 0871 and 0844 dial through codes with companies like bestminutes.co.uk that came up as unobtainable if I tried to dial them directly without adding the 1280 prefix.

Post Office also allows use of 18185 1899 and other prefix carriers without any restrictions at present.

And so it should. It really is preposterous that Ofcom does not mandate proper competition (soft touch regulation?) so that all providers have to allow competition. Of course, that does stop the hapless user being made a soft touch.

As to the blocking of 0871 and 0844 numbers unless the 1280 BT override code is used on Post Office HomePhone that is being done by Cable & Wireless without the Post Office's direct knowledge and permission.  By contrast blocking the BT 1280 override code or indirect access carriers like 18185 requires a positive negative action against customers which has been taken by TalkTalk but not by the Post Office.

Wholesale Line Rental is not a Fit for Purpose product since according to Ofcom the companies selling it cannot make a profit from just reselling the line rental alone and rely on making you use overpriced call service to compensate for the excessive and uncompetitive prices which they have to pay to BT for the line rental.  Also you cannot have a new line installed by carriers like PostOffice or TalkTalk but have to get it installed by BT, do a minimum contract period and then transfer.  However the useless Ofcom only judge whether it is a success or not on the basis of the number of customers that move to WLR.

What a pathetic spineless shower Ofcom's bloated executives are.  They are quite unfit to exercise the competitition functions over telecoms companies that would normally be exercised on a far more diligent basis by the Office of Fair Trading.

Unfortunately under the rotten regime of New Labour many of us have now begun to realise that the system is rotten at its very core and that matters will never improve under this government. :(

But if you use the 1280 prefix you will probably be charged the BT 0845 and 0870 prices on your Post Office phone bill.

You will only be charged the Post Office official prices if you omit to dial 1280 before the 0845 or 0870 number. ::) ;)
