Title: Findmypast.com (formally 1837online.com)
Post by peecue on Nov 13th, 2006 at 12:03am
Can anyone help me?  They have a standard 0870 777 1877 but the international number is 44 870 777 1837  I can't believe that they think one can ring an 0870 number from abroad or can they?

Any help would be gratefully received

unfortunately from most places abroad it is possible to call a UK 0870 number.  :(

However, if you provide the full name and address of the company we can try to find out their geographic number.   ;)

020 7608 3160 is the correct geog. phone number for FINDMYPAST  (not findyourpast) - just tried it.

Should be entered in the verified list.

Just found an entry in the unverified database for 1837online. Phone number is 020 7549 0900 and fax 020 7549 0949

This form gives the numbers above and the 24 Britton Street address.

I've added 020 7608 3160 to the database.

The 0207 549 0900 number is for a company called Title Research, (see: http://www.titleresearch.com/static/Contactus_index.asp) who are also at the 24 Britton St London EC1M 5UA address, as FINDMYPAST

Two companies must be connected, or are in fact the same organisation.

Hello,

I am Ian Tester, Head of Marketing at findmypast. We have noted the comments on this useful site and, you will be happy to know, abandoned the use of the 0870 number.

It was introduced with the best of intentions - i.e we thought it easier to remember than our direct number (we used to be called 1837online so we picked an 0870 with 1837 in it). It never made any money for us as we actually pick up our telephones to customers as quickly as we can rather than keeping them on hold.

At findmypast we personally get incredibly annoyed at sitting on so-called helplines for hours whilst companies make a profit out of our misery and we don't intend to be part of that 0870 club. We actually rather like our customers and actively encourage them to call us and we're happy to provide them with a reasonably-priced way of doing this.

Anyhow, I am happpy to confirm our number as 020 7549 0990 (International +44 20 7549 0990) and to assure all users that we will publish this proactively (we are changing all our emails at the moment to include the number which we hope is another step in the right direction).

We hope this goes a little way towards redressing the balance!  :)

Ian Tester (ian.tester@findmypast.com, 020 7549 0957)

P.S Keep up the good work on this site - I shall certainly be using it (moving house at the moment and so far £6+ spent on 0845/0870 phone calls to "utility" companies to change address!!!)

Welcome to the site Ian and congratulations on realising,( and changing), the evilness of these numbers.

Hope your house move goes OK.

Just looked at your site, you still have 0870 for your international number!

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply and thanks for changing the number.  It is great to hear about new things happening, and specially for us genealogists (or those of us just working on our own family history) it is an expensive hobby, so any help is always very helpful

Just to let everyone know that Findmypast should now be completely 0870/other premium number free. If anyone spots any rogue examples of the consigned-to-history number anywhere please let me know and we will do our best to remove them.

Thanks again for bringing this to our attention. We would be happy to talk to any other businesses that are failing to see the error of their ways ;-)

Best wishes all,

Ian
