Title: 029 numbers are Premium Rate
Post by clive.davison on May 5th, 2011 at 2:49pm
Just had a huge bill from O2 due to phoning admiral insurance on the 029 2060 1297 number associated with Admiral Insurance.  I queried this because as far as I was concerned it is just a normal geographical number.  According to O2 however, it is a premium rate number.  Has anyone else heard this?  Are there anymore we need to know about?

Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest you ask o2 again because 0292 is the geographical number for Cardiff.

Ask them on what basis they think it is a premium number when clearly it isn't.

As Sherbert points its just a ordinary geographical number which should be included in any inclusive minutes if you have any, or charged at the appropriate rate for 01/02/03 calls.

Enter it in http://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm and your see.  ;)

029 is the code for Cardiff and therefore it is a geographic number. Dispute the bill if you have been charged more than the price of a geographic call.

If they maintain that it is charged at a premium, then ask for a link to where it says that this is the case. If they can't provide one, then I think you have an excellent case and if they can, I'm not so sure, but do let us know.

Clive,

is this the number in question? 02920 601 294

I would call O2 or check the bill online to see how much per minute you are charged, and dispute it

Let us know how you get on please

Technically it is ( 029 )  2.

That'll be  ( 029 )  2060  1294.

But not so accurate list of "prefixes":

http://www.telephonenumbers.co.uk/Prefixes/i=1

Quote:
0843 and 0844      Basic (local) rate numbers
0845      Basic (local) rate numbers
0870      Higher (national) rate numbers
0871, 0872
and 0873      Higher (national) rate numbers

These mythological "local" and "national" rates rear their heads again. 0871, 0872 and 0873 are now Premium Rate Services (PRS), and as such are regulated by PhonepayPlus.

Quote:
090 and 091      Premium rate numbers - costs vary and can be as high as £1.50 a minute
098      Sexual entertainment services at a premium rate

These are also Premium Rate Services and not just premium rate.

One could always consult would looks to be the source of this information (apparently created in September 2009) - except that this is published by Ofcom!

catj,

thanks for pointing out my School boy error,

I was actually in a hurry and mearly copied the number direct from the website,

my appologies

it should have read 029 2060 1294 if we want to be technical, it also "looks" better

much like 020 "London" codes

@Dave - Yes, I see that some stuff isn't so accurate. That's a shame because the rest of the info on the other pages is pretty good.

@SCV - There are many differences between that list and the Ofcom list. The Ofcom list contains multiple spelling and other errors.

@CJT - Yes, exactly like London, using the very same 2+8 number format; unlike these clueless people... http://phonecodes.wordpress.com/2010/08/28/o-two-nine-two-woe-for-cardiff/
