I must be a member of over over 25 forums, and I find the page numbering here on this forum, to be very user unfriendly.

It's frequently hard to see what page you are on. The bold is not very bold.
You need First << and Last >> buttons.
You need Previous < and Next > buttons.

..... and I did try the toggle alternative

I agree with you... I think they forum software used is fairly old now unfortunately  :(
