I notice that the cost of indirect calls to (UK Fixed) 01/02/03 numbers has risen from 0.5p to 0.7p a minute. ( Still 5p connection charge.)

That's making me study my use very closely (I get free E&W 01/02/03 calls of up to 90 minutes each on a legacy CPS contract but use 18185 for my weekday daytime calls).

Plusnet's offering of free unlimited BB for 12 months for those switching line rental to them and their all inclusive calls package for £6/month, means they're likely to get my business if my 18185 expenditure tops £6/month (despite Plusnet being owned by BT).

Plusnet tell me they allow the use of 18185 - so that's the calls to Spain for 4p connection and 1p/minute covered.

With landline providers starting to include calls to mobile numbers within their Anytime call plans, the days of signing up for a weekend call plan for 01, 02 & 03 numbers and using an override provider for weekday calls and for calls to mobile numbers may be on the way out.

Override providers may still be useful for calls to premium rate numbers and for international calls.

It is worth taking the time to study the all inclusive call plans because I have assisted a number of my neighbours in this regard. Initially most of us saw the UNLIMITED call plan as the best plan to be on and initially if sufficient calls were made that was true. Now expecially with mobiles being the prefered method of communication for most of us it is not always the best option. I am saving in excess of £9.50 a month now I have ditched the all inclusive fee even though I still use the landline for outgoing calls but each caller will differ and will have to weigh up the best plan for them.

I have signed up with a land-line provider that charges 2 p per minute (inc VAT) for Geographic calls and 7 p per minute for mobiles with NO connection fee.  :)

That plan wouldn't suit us as we use our mobiles quite frequently for both direct calls and text messages, also broadband and TV is included in the package. I estimate that we use around 500 minute’s virgin to virgin and 400 to other networks for £5 per user.

What I was attempting to point out to members was the unlimited packages that are available are not always good value for money if they are not used correctly, with this in mind I have saved many of my neighbours and friends around £5 per month on average by ditching the call unlimited plan as it was costing up to £9.50 per month in some instances.

I calculated that many users calling via the land line only use £5 worth of calls a month on average and that is taking into account the connection and call charges because they mainly use their mobiles. This does not suit everybody but it is worth doing a comparison.

It is just worth calculating how many calls are made on average each month because in some cases the call unlimited package are not cost effective as I found out.

People assume it is the best plan because they just pay one monthly fee but in many cases it is very expensive for the customers and very profitable for the Telco’s.
