Find our where a landline number terminates
Jan 29th, 2005 at 7:23pm

Hi,

This is slightly off-topic but I think it might be of interest to some members. On our WAP site at www.web2txt.co.uk/wap there is the ability to find out where a landline telephone number terminates.

On the main page of our WAP site at the bottom there is a link labelled "UK Tel 2 Town" click the link then scroll down to the form and enter the landline phone number you want to know about and click "Tel 2 Town" it will then look up that number from our database and tell you the geographic region in which it terminates.

The info was originally provided by the old Ofcom site, I simply databased it and gave it a WAP front end for portability. More credit to the Crown than to me lol

As I said a little O-T but hopefully of use to some people.

Cheers

The same information is also available in a booklet form from BT:

"The Phone Book Companion"

It is very handy, I keep it beside the phone.  It contains UK and international codes and decoder.  It used to cost £2.50 a couple of years ago. The info may well be  available on BT's website, too.

I use THIS SITE.

It has the advantage of having a 'reverse search' facility as well (enter the town name to get the STD code).

http://www.magsys.co.uk/telecom/codelook.asp

This could be interesting as it can look up geo prefixes and other partial numbers, and gives info on which phone company is involved -eg

0844700 ... Telecom One
0871504 ... Magrathea
0238086 ... Totton, Southampton
0207858 ... London, Telstra
0292005 ... Cardiff, Worldcom
0845456 ... local rate, Opal
