You and Yours again
Nov 8th, 2005 at 10:59am

This programme has on numerous a occasions tried to justify itself by stating that it always takes the caller's number and then rings him back.

How then can it justify this morning's trailer at 9.58 giving the 0870 number and saying that calls cost no more than 32 pence?

From You and Yours
at 1438 today.

Dear

Thank you for your e-mail. I'm very impressed by your vigilance!

We do offer to ring callers back. If they say that won't be necessary we continue the call at their expense. Extensive monitoring has revealed that calls to Call You and Yours are hardly ever longer than four minutes. So while the call need hardly cost you anything if you take up our offer to call back, even if you don't, you are highly unlikely to spend more than 32p. And if you do, it will have been your choice. I'm finding it hard to think of a way that we could be fairer than that.

Thank you again for your e-mail,

Andrew Smith

My reply:

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your prompt reply , in reply to a question from I cannot remember who, Winifred Robinson stated that you always ring the caller back and ask them for their number, you have apparently changed the rules.

Do you also remind the caller of the high cost of the call?

You state "I'm finding it hard that we could be fairer than that".

May I help you?

Abandon all together the exorbitant charge and get a geographical number, as your colleagues on Watchdog have.

Stop, once and for all, calling 0870 a "National Number" it is not, it is a premium rate number.

Apply the BBC guidelines and quote the cost per minute, not what you think it might be.

Regards

Also since it can cost up to 50p per minute to call 0870 numbers on a pay as you go mobile they should be saying it can cost up to £2.00 to make such a call.

50p?
Which one, please? I had thought that it was T-mobile pay-as-you-go that topped it with 40p?
Must try to keep up to date.  Embarrassed

I had the impression that 50p was being charge at one point by one PAYG mobile phone operator.  That information may of course be historic since, as you know, accurate information on this issue is very hard indeed to obtain.

As far as I'm aware the highest is 40ppm with most mobile networks charging either 35ppm or 40ppm.

I think Virgin charge around 10ppm-15ppm to carry these same calls.  Calls to 0871 may be higher though.
