Tesco overcharge UK customers
Mar 16th, 2006 at 6:30pm

Quote from Tesco

“....   If your e-mail relates to an urgent Grocery Home Shopping query e.g. Late delivery or missing items please call us on the following number.

For our customers in the United Kingdom:           08457 22 55 33
For our customers in the Republic of Ireland: 00 800 00 22 55 33 .... "

End Quote

Tesco must think we don’t mind being overcharged, here in the UK

Isn't that an international freephone number?  So where does the call go to?

Have just dialled the number from the UK (exactly as shown, including the 00 prefix) - answered by a recorded message from Tesco (saying it's now out of hours)!

I've just tried (BT line, from the UK) and get the recorded BT female:

Have just tried it again (also BT line from UK) I got a regular ringing tone - didn't bother waiting for an answer.
Did you include the double-0 prefix?

Yes, but I've just realised I was dialling out on Primus.  With the 1280 prefix, I got the ring tone - but it rang and rang and rang .........

Which appears to indicate that Primus don't carry 00800 calls.  One to bear in mind.

Well, if they answer it too soon, they're paying for the call cost.  Grin
Be interesting to see whether the 0845 number is answered quickly but then put on hold for ages - so that you're paying them for the privilege of waiting to be answered!  Angry

The database has 01382 812026 for internet shopping support, and 01382 822568 for Tesco Music Downloads (same 0845 number).

If the international freephone number works, and if they will deal with UK queries, this should be listed in the "Freephone" column. At present it has the number under "Other info" as a number to call from Ireland.

Tesco have over 90 stores in Ireland, so why on earth would they use an international freephone number? Surely they could set up some sort of number in Ireland?

I have tried many times (and failed) to obtain from BT or any other telephone provider whether 00800 is actually freephone.  According to them the only way to find out is if I dial it and wait for the bill. Roll Eyes

Is it free through TalkTalk or must people use 1280?

See this BT booklet:
Quote:
International Freefone is free to callers wherever they are in the world.

That's up to TalkTalk - but it wouldn't hurt to use 1280.
