ASA, action re 0845
Nov 15th, 2006 at 4:28pm

On the 11th November 2006 I again had to complain about one of our local newspapers accepting an add with the "0845 charged at local rate" statement, the last time they completely lied to the ASA and said an advert was not in on a certain date, I sent the original page to ASA and the newspaper caved in, the ASA have replied on the 14th November, bearing in mind the 12 & 13th was a weekend, quite impressed with that response, the reply folows:-

Dear Mr

DATA ENTRY/08459....

Thank you for your recent email regarding the above matter.
As you are aware 08459 numbers cannot be referred to as local rate. We have recently issued an Ad Alert to the industry advising of our requirements for such numbers.
We have therefore referred the problem to our Compliance team, which will resolve it quickly and effectively. As you know, the team does not write to complainants, but rest assured that we share your concerns about this issue and we shall address it thoroughly.
Thank you for taking the time to draw this to our attention. Yours sincerely

Emily Henwood
Complaints Executive

So the ASA do seem to take matters seriously and do something about it, unlike Ofcon. What a pity we can't transfer some of the ASA team to Ofcon to show them how it should be done.

Great news.

Did you complain via http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/how_to_complain/complaints_form/ or just an ordinary e-mail?

Spotted an advert  using an 0844 number and claiming to be local rate.  Are 0844 numbers charged the same as 0845 numbers?  Not really seen many 0844 numbers. mostly 0845 and 0870.

No, most certainly not (well, by BT anyway).

0844 numbers can cost between ½p/minute and 5p/minute to call - that's why they're used as gateway numbers by the numerous companies now offering cheap calls (for example, check out the cost of calling Spain HERE).

For BT's rates to such numbers, see HERE.

0845/0870 are the most common numbers but since revenue share on 0870 is soon to end then expect to see more use of 0871 (10p/min from a BT landline) and 0844 (upto 5p/min from a BT landline as mentioned by Heinz).

As always with all call prices for calls to 084x/087x, it is based on calls from a BT landline - most other providers charge more than BT.

No they cost between 0.5p and 5p per minute at all times depending on the 0844 number in question as others have pointed out.

The key thing is that they are not and have never been "local rate" thus any complaint to the ASA on this matter is sure to be upheld in your favour.
