Thanks for the exceptionally fast reply.

The Leeds number, 0113 281 6061, appears to work and goes to the Cogent switchboard. I tried it today (Saturday) and was informed the office was closed but it gave me the option to leave a message, which I did. I'll try it again on Monday and get back to you as it's the Leeds office I am dealing with.

The Croydon number, 0208 662 4444, is one I had already found and gives you a BT message stating the number has changed to 0844 984 5200. The message keeps repeating without any options.

I found another couple of geographic numbers listed on this site under 'Cogent', but one was no longer valid and the other was an employment agency who stated the number I was dialing and being connected to them on, wasn't even their number.

It looks like this company have taken a lot a trouble to ensure we use their NTS number. If they hadn't been nominated by my insurance company, I would find another solicitor.

I've been looking at this one as well. Cogent Solicitors has connections with other law companies and they all like to use 0844 and 0870 numbers. Lips Sealed

Another number for them is 0113 281 6386. I found this number on Praxis Partners' website from December 2001 on the Internet Archive:

Unfortunately, the direct dial numbers in the range 0113 284 7xxx have since been discontinued. At the beginning of 2002, they switched to 0870 832 51xx numbers.

They look as though they originated at Joseph's Well in Leeds, BT Phonebook confirms this with the listing of this 0870 number.

As you found out, the 020 number now has a network redirection message to the 0844 one. The 0844 984 5200 number is the main published one for Cogent, and a quick call identifies that it is to extension 5406.

yields nothing.

Try 0113 281 6061 or 0113 281 6386. Let us know how you get on, this will help others with the same query. If these are suitable alternatives, then I will list them in the database.

The number 0870 832 5106 answers the same recording as 0844 984 5200 ("You have reached the mailbox 5406. …"). Depending on your tariff, it might be cheaper to call this one. I'm assuming that these are the same destination.

Strangely 0870 832 5105 says it's mailbox 5105 (rather than 5405). Undecided

We know that 0870 832 5100 is answered as "Plexis Law" and that subsequent numbers (at least those 0870 832 51xx) are highly likely to be at the same office, I probably in Leeds.

I cannot find any trace of Praxis 0113 numbers on the internet. If you have any numbers, fax or voice or whatever, on your paperwork, then please post them as they might help us locate the proper number.

The number 0870 832 5110 is the staff sickness line. It is for staff Plexis, Cogent Partnership, Cogent Law North, Scion North.

Cogent Law South and Scion South staff should contact 0844 984 5215. The alternative for this number is 020 8256 4615.

Unfortunately 020 8256 4600 isn't the alternative for 0844 984 5200 and neither are any 020 8256 46xx numbers. The 020 8256 4600 number, along with others nearby answer as "SPX UK Limited". The SPX message crops up on the 0844 numbers, eg 0844 984 5206. Undecided

020 8256 4630 is for Saga Legal Advice Helpline

There is an unverified entry for Cogent Solicitors: 020 8256 1348, however, 1360 is for William Murray Communications based elsewhere in Croydon.

I had expected to be able to find a 01/02 prefix that the 0844/0870 numbers map to. The best alternative I can suggest at the moment is therefore 0113 281 6061 for the Leeds office and 020 8688 3030 for the Croydon office.

It is 0113 223 2896 and his 0870 number is 0870 832 5260. No apparent pattern. Undecided

0113 223 2890 through to 2899 are a block of numbers for Praxis/Cogent, but don't map to 0870 numbers in any logical pattern.

However, 0113 223 2893 looks like a general number for this office (same as calling 0870 832 5103).

All of this leaves me thinking that there is no logical pattern. Maybe these are the measures that they have gone to in order to ensure that the alternatives cannot be found.

There is no reason why there has to be any pattern when assigning NGNs to DDIs. In a large organisation it's often easier to do so, but most switchboards will allow fairly arbitrary assignments of incoming called numbers to internal numbers. If they are sourcing 08s or Geographic numbers individually, rather than buying a large block, then that would be one reason why there is no pattern, or it could simply be a system that's "grown" rather than being set up logically in the first place.

The prefixes 0844 984, 0870 832 and 0113 223 are all allocated to communications provider Affiniti.

Going upwards, numbers 0113 223 2900 through to 2937 are all temporarily out of order, except 2908 which is answered by a fax machine. 299x are BJSS and all the rest of 29xx is not recognised. What does it mean when a number is "temporarily out of order"?

Yes, spot on. They may have other numbers elsewhere, or they may even have some of the NGNs delivered via VoIP.

It could be anything. Normally it's flagged back by a PABX when it thinks it might be something wrong with forwarding the call to an extension that re-dialing later would fix. e.g. see here for this and other messages that can be sent..

About all you can say is that most of the network from your end onwards thinks that it's a valid number that's been allocated to someone else..

Thanks for this feedback. This number is answered as Plexus Law which is Cogent's sister company in the Parabis Group. The number 020 8256 4400 is answered as Cogent Law so I've decided to list it as the number for Croydon Office Switchboard (I don't discount the fact that 8688 3030 works, but as this number is answered as Cogent, I have listed it).
