When I tried yesterday the only number i got was the one I put in my OP, entering Derbyshire BS and the 0845 numbers only gave me what I put in my OP, otherwise I would not have posted the request

Although if I, now, put in "Derbyshire building society", I do get the number you have supplied, I have used "BS" before for building societies without problems, looks like I will in future have to put in the whole words

.
Thanks Dave, I will try that number when I get a chance.
OK, hands up, I missed a digit when originally searching,0845
6002004
This is, unfortunately, a shortcoming of the search engine. It means that it has no intelligence and returns results that match the search string exactly. A similar situation exists with 'and' and '&' whereby a search for
hm revenue and customs
will not return entries that are titled
HM Revenue & Customs and vice versa.
When administering the database I retitle entries with names as spelled by the organisation in question. For example, the name of the Derbyshire Building Society is just that, rather than "Derbyshire BS". This does not preclude new entries being submitted with the latter which means that a search of it is only ever likely to return unverified entries.
In actual fact, had you entered
derbyshire b
into the search box it would have returned entries listed as
Derbyshire BS as well as those under
Derbyshire Building Society, and
Derbyshire B.S. had there been any of those.
I remind all users of the site that it works by us all pitching in. If you find any unverified entries that work, please let us know by posting in the forum and I, or one of my colleagues, will update the listings. The same goes for verified or unverified entries that don't work and so require removal.
Since I made my posting yesterday, I have carried out some more work.
I believe that telephone enquiries for Derbyshire Building Society are answered in Dunfermline, along with those of Dunfermline Building Society. My reasoning is that the numbers for both societies use the same Scottish male voiceover with options being the same. I, therefore, suggest that this may be the reason for the Derby numbers now no longer being in service, instead having network redirectors to the 0845 number.
Now that the lines are open, they have IVRs (menu options) on. For Derbyshire Building Society the numbers 01383 848181 through to 848184 all have options for savings and investments, mortgages, and insurance. These are for both new and existing business. The same IVR is on 0845 600 4005, 0845 601 5010 and 0845 601 5020.
The number 0845 600 2004, which is in the OP, is for online savings and its geographic counterpart is 01383 848185.
I came across two other numbers, 01383 848180 and 848186, which answer the same and are for The Derbyshire. I don't know what they are for and don't have a 08 number for them. They may be for telephone savings as the message refers to a particular savings product, saying that it is a branch-only one and cannot be operated over the telephone.
The Derby numbers redirect to 0845 375 0600 which is for the main office switchboard, the alternative for which is 01383 627727. It is answered as "Dunfermline Building Society", but it is shared with that of The Derbyshire.
Dunfermline Building Society has the alternative 01383 848100, which is voiced by the same male with the same three options as above for The Derbyshire on 848181. This matches 0845 345 0409, which is published on
The Dunfermline contact page, as well as 0845 733 6688, 0845 601 3066, 0845 402 0400 and 0845 456 5446.
Cheshire Building Society is also part of Nationwide Building Society and I suspect that its lines may also be connected with Dunfermline, them being answered by the same Scottish male voiceover. I will have another look at this tomorrow when they are open.
