0870 Direct Dial to US and Canada
Jan 29th, 2004 at 3:31pm

Hi,

I just stumbled across a 0870 service which allows you to nominate a target destination is US or Canada.

The site then assigns a UK 0870 number (make sure to note it down straight away - I didn't and had to register another one  Shocked ) which when dialled puts the call through to the US/Canadian destination.

I have given the service a good testing - it seems to work fine during peak and off-peak times; I haven't tried weekends yet....

URL is http://www.uk2me.com

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here.

Are you using an 0870 number to call USA or Canada ???
Most of the low cost providers are charging about 4ppm inclusive to call anytime, so what are you paying ??? 10ppm ??? I'll let you work it out !
Try OneTel for international calls to USA & Canada.

Ahh - but I have Orange Everyday 50 on my Orange phone line 2- and as 0870 numbers are INCLUSIVE in the 50 minutes per day, effectively it costs me LESS than 1 p per minute....

And then there are the other advantages, like single stage dialling, not suffering transcoding distortion caused by the low bit rate codec that 18866 use, plus getting through first time without the verbage generated by the 18866 IVR.....

Interesting comment on call18866 - I was thinking of trying them but was put off by the fact that you can't pay by direct debit (dd gives you much more protection than paying by card, especially if you want to cancel).

You're saying that sound quality is inferior to conventional landline services?

Yes - exactly that.......

One of the ways that 18866 can afford to be so cheap is by using low bit rate codecs (such as G.723) in order to squeeze the maximum number of channels out of each little bit of bandwidth.

Couple two different low bit codecs together (GSM and 18866) and the result is distortion/loss of quality....

There is an old addage - you get what you pay for!

I get free evening and weekend calls via my wireless broadband provider, but use 18866 for all my daytime, overseas and mobile calls, as it's by far the cheapest option.  I've never had a problem with poor sound quality.

If by "the verbage" you mean the tariff message, I find confirmation of the rate I'm going to be charged a useful additional service.  What a pity other suppliers don't let you know what you're going to be paying for a call.  It would make it much easier to determine the cheapest option.

I regularly call the US for 2p a minute with breathe-formerly atlantic.

I just put a number in front of the 001 code. The amount comes off my credit card -and when I dial the number they give you it tells me how much I have left.

Can also be used peak time in the UK-and I expect it can be used with 0870 too
