Have you tried getting someone there to call you to get the number they use ? If so, does it give you the 0870 number or a "number withheld" message ? Undecided
I would assume then that all the UNI numbers are provided by NTL, in which case if you can get a list of the "Geo" numbers and check it against the list at the Ofcom website, you may be able to deduce the accomodation numbers from those in or around the sequence that are not used.
As it might be a longish job and take a few phone calls to check out those possible, I wish you Luck.

Don't forget to post your results if you find them.

Hi,

I tried them all, and none of them worked. If anyone has a better advice then calling a telephone box instead, contact me, please!

Thanks & Regards

Does anyone know the geographic numbers for student accommodation on the Uni campus (numbers start 0870 282 xxxx)
I tried to phone from abroad but number is unobtainable. Uni tell me that its an NTL number and that there is no BT equivalent. BT tell me there has to be a BT number as NTL only re-route via their equipment!!!!!!
Any assistance would be appreciated as phoning a UK mobile from abroad is very expensive.
Thanks,

By "BT number", I assume you mean geographical number.

Anyway, the following are allocated to NTL:

01483 59
01483 68
01483 82
01483 83
01483 84
01483 85
01483 87
01483 88
01483 00

Try those. However, if it's the last number, you'll probably only be able to call it from NTL lines.

Funny that... numbers at Swansea University start 0870 282 xxxx as well.

However, the xxxx doesn't correspond exactly to your internal number - e.g. 79xxx is 6xxx.

Anyone have any suggestions for possible geographic numbers to these extensions?

Interesting! Well, I suppose that's why they call 0870 a non-geographical number. There's no reason why different numbers with the same code map to numbers in different locations.

I have a strange sense of deja vu - I'm sure I've looked up info on Swansea Uni before, but I can't find it in the forum now.

NTL have 9 numbers in Swansea:

01792 40
01792 41
01792 51 to 01792 55 inclusive
01792 60
01792 61

You might find the next digit is different too (seeing as it's already different depending on if you call from internally or externally). I'd try 9 and 6 first though. Hopefully you'll get number unobtainable so it won't cost anything to try them. Oh, and if you get through to the wrong person, ask them where they are - you may have found Surrey or another uni's number!

I've just found this page on the Surrey system.
Quote:
For people to phone you from outside of campus
they must dial 0870 282 then
0 if your extension starts with 52
1 if your extension starts with 53
2 if your extension starts with 54

Following this they should enter the last three digits of your extension.

For example if your extension is 53249 then from outside dial 0870 2821249 - easy!

See my suggestions in Post 2 of the below thread for ways to try to challenge this abuse.  Of course in this other case it was an 0871 at 10p per minute at all times but most of the issues are the same:-

http://www.saynoto0870.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?board=test;action=display;num=...

You should also consider submitting a request to the university under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 asking for disclosure of the underlying geographic numbers that these 0870 numbers point to.

You should also ask for details of the revenue share received by the university on each call and/or whether the telecoms equipment and lines were installed by the phone company free if they were allowed to use ripoff 0870 numbers.  You should ask the university to reveal if their facilities/telecoms/acommodation manager examined the cost of these calls compared to normal numbers starting 01 and 02 and whether the phone supplier offered an option to provide 01/02 numbers if the university had paid something towards the cost of the installation.

As it's an NTL system, try dialling 173 and see if it gives a number, as suggested here on the Cambridge University thread.

Hello Everyone!

Can anyone offer advice on getting around the ridiculous prices charged by the Uni and NTL to call the phones in campus rooms?

The numbers are in the format: 0870 282 ****

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Jess x
