Anyone found an alternative number for student accommodation at Bath University?  Rooms in Solsbury Court are 0870 XXXX XXX.  Presumably same for other accommodation.

Could you provide a bit more information? What is the next group of digits after 0870, and are those common to all the phones on campus? Who provides the service?

I did some searching, and the phone system at Bath (and other unis such as York) uses "dognbonezone" phonecards. This system is operated by Catalyst Management. Unfortunately there are no numbers listed as belonging to this company on the Ofcom website.

Without knowing which provider actually carries the calls, there's no way to find a "real" number, short of trying all the prefixes. There is also the possibility that this is a VoIP system.

The number is 0870 754 xxxx and it is a dognbonezone phonecard.  Not sure if it is the same number for all of the campus.  As it is a dognbonezone card, does this mean I must dial 0870?

Catalyst Management seems to be a small company operating out of a farm in Cheshire. They probably use another company to carry their calls.

Have a look at:

http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/search/Phones/oftel_cl_sabc_1225.html

There are 47 different blocks of numbers allocated in Bath, so you'll have to try 47 different numbers... And even then there's always the danger they are using voice over IP, and it'll be a waste of time!

Hi Jenny, I have merged your thread with the existing one. Have a look at what's already been said and come back and let us know whether it applies in your case.

Is your number an 0870 754 xxxx one? Does each room have it's own 0870 number, or do you dial the 0870 number and then enter the extension number? Is it a Dog n Bone Zone system?

The poster has contacted me via a personal message to say that the number is 01225 36xxxx. I was waiting for her to confirm that the NGN is still 0870 754 xxxx before adding it to the database.

I just tried the 01225 36XXXX number with my daughter's phone in the John Wood complex, but number was unobtainable. Her 0870 number is 0870 7532XXX though, rather than this person's 0870 754XXX.

Both 0870 753 and 0870 754 prefixes are allocated to Your Communications and are dated 05/1996, so services operating on them could be upto 10 years old. I therefore assume that the number jrawle has posted is a big clue to finding the number for the John Wood Complex. 01225 36 is allocated to Telewest, dated 04/1995, so we can be pretty certain it's a Telewest number we're after.

Within Bath, the following prefixes were allocated to Telewest on 04/1995:
  • 01225 34 04/1995
  • 01225 35 04/1995
  • 01225 36 04/1995
  • 01225 37 04/1995
  • 01225 38 04/1995
  • 01225 39 04/1995

There is also 01225 40 which is dated 07/1994 which is the earliest date any numbers are shown at (including all BT ones that have been in existance since the year dot). Finally, 01225 14 dated 03/2001 is one which probably can't be dialled from a BT line, but I think that the date's too late.

I think that the number you're after is one of those listed above dated 04/1995. Hopefully we can get confirmation from jennyevans68 whether the last four digits are the last four of the internal extension number or the 0870. My money is on them being the internal number, so find out what your daughter's internal extension is and try the last four digits with 01225 36 and the other 04/1995 prefixes.

Thanks Dave, nice try.

It tried all the numbers, all unobtainable with my daughter's last 4 digits except for 01225 37, which rang but not in my daughter's room.
Did the poster of the 01225 37XXXX number confirm that it actually worked for them?

Hi Muffy,

I have sent jennyevans68 a private message to get some clarification as to how her number relates to 01225 36xxxx.

The last four digits you are trying; are they the last four digits of the internal extension number and not the last four of the 0870 number?

Ah, ok. I didn't realise that there was a different internal number; I just used the last 4 digits of the 0870 number. I will have to ask my daughter for that, but it may be a little while before I can try it. She has started with lectures all day today and she's already getting fed up of my phoning up. They prefer to have the feeling of independence once they are there, despite the fact that they have t be financially reliant on their parents now, with these arbitrary and iniquitous extra taxes the government has placed on education.
I will try the number when I can and post the result. Thanks to all who have helped, either way.

OK, Great. I have just managed to phone my daughter on 01225 37XXXX.

Interestingly the 0870 number has a different digit 3rd from the end. On the 0870 number it is X6XX, where the internal number is X4XX. I got through using the 01225 37X4XX.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Muffy, before you sign off, can you clarify what the first few digits of your daughter's number are? I am assuming that similar numbers have the same prefix, so this will help others to find it.

Is the number 01225 37 + last four digits of the internal number?
And what is the internal number (with the last two digits **ed out)?

From what you said above the 0870 is 0870 7532XXX. So does this mean that the number is as follows (where the last two digits are the same)?:

0870 75326xx => 01225 3724xx
