0872 numbers
Sep 3rd, 2008 at 10:29pm

So, when did 0872 numbers start being used, anyone know how much they are charged at?

Just noticed that ebuyer have an 0872 number and I don't remember seeing one before.

Cheers, Des.

I think ebuyer is the only company at present (that we know of anyway) that is using 0872 numbers. Just like 0871 numbers, they can be charged from anything between 6 pence to 10 pence per minute (from a BT landline anyway - obviously from other landlines and mobiles, it may be charged at a different price).

0872 is an extension of the 0871 range because available number blocks are nearly exhausted, thus calls are charged in the same way.

Quite a few of those numbers Google throws up are from when the codes were in use previously, ie 0872 for Truro and 0873 for Abergavenny, and the clue is in the number of digits. Those with 0872 or 0873 followed by six digits are obviously old numbers. So are foreign numbers.

Details in the National Telephone Numbering Plan, page 13 shows 0871, 0872 and 0873 are in the same category. 0843 is also an extension of 0844.

Examination of Ofcom's numbering allocation lists shows the first 0872 blocks were allocated in May 2007 and 0843 in November 2007.

Also, some 0872 numbers (and possibly 0873 numbers) are Irish Vodafone mobile numbers, and could be mistaken from UK numbers as they have 7 digits following the 087x (like our 087x numbers do).

Yep there are a few red herrings in there - even more before I restricted it to UK sites. It was just a very quick search to see if any were in use yet.  (I'd not actually come across any 0873's myself, though I had seen an 0872 somewhere.)

Although ebuyer seems to be the only place that is publicly making use of it...
