there website is www.maccosmetics.co.uk, phone number is 0870 0342 676

Contact page shows online customer services as 0870 034 2999, but store and "counter" queries are on a freephone number: 0800 074 6905.

Terms & Conditions gives:

Company name: ELC Online Limited

Address:

73 Grosvenor Street
London
W1K 3BQ

Company registration number: 5738536
VAT registration number GB 193-0816-58

Googling for ELC Online Limited reveals it has connections with other companies:

Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
Aveda
"Origins" competition for Telegraph newspaper
Crème de la Mer
Crème de la Mer Australia

All these have 0870 034 phone numbers.

A search of the database for
Bobbi Brown
reveals one unverified entry:

Estée Lauder       0870 0342444             020 74096700             Estee Lauder, Aveda, Clinique, Bobbi Brown - all Estee Lauder companies

The address on the Estee Lauder website is 73 Grosvenor Street and the number begins 0870 034, so I think we are getting warm.

Try this number and let us know how you go. This may be the main switchboard, so you might have to ask to be put through.

Additionally, there is an unverified entry for Aveda:

Aveda       08704286384             02072976384

See also this post for Aveda which suggests for 0870 428 xxxx to try using 020 7297 xxxx. This may provide a clue as to what numbers to try.

Feedback on numbers which work/don't work is much appreciated and will allow us to verify them as necessary.

I am also looking for a geographical number, to call the store. Their website has an 0800 number on the bottom left, 0800 074 6905, but you cannot get to a store through this number. I did call this number and they gave me the 0870 number. I asked for an alternative, but the lady said that there wasn't one.

There is no geographical numbers on this database, or BT.com or yell.com.

The numbers supplied by Dave seem to be office numbers.

Has anyone else got any ideas as to how to find a geographical number for their stores?

Hello and welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM. It's been a few years since we last looked at this and coming back to it I've come up with the following.

Estée Lauder owns Aveda, MAC, Clinique, La Mer and Bobbi Brown, to name but a few. ELC Online Ltd is its online division, ELC presumably standing for “Estée Lauder Companies”.

I’ve been through the database and picked up on entries for these brands, and tagged them with “Estée Lauder Companies”, so if you do a search of that, it will return them all.

From what I've seen, there are two types of number; those for head office (online orders) and store numbers.

Head Office/Online Numbers

Firstly, I'll address the online orders numbers which the OP (missscotland) asked about, although I note that she came back and read my posting, but did not repay the courtesy of my time by telling us how she got on which might help others.

As I discovered, the UK online shops for Mac Cosmetics and some others are run by ELC Online Limited.

The number given now on MAC Cosmetics is 0800 054 2999, by in 2008 I noted that it was 0870 034 2999. It turns out that these two numbers are both answered with the same IVR (menu options): 1. Track an order 2. Online query 3. Exchange or refund

I saw that the last few digits of each number are the same and wondered if this holds good for others operated by this company. It appears that they do.

MAC's 0870 034 2676 matches 0800 054 2676 with options: 1. Track an order 2. Place an order 3. MAC Pro 4. Exchange or refund.

Aveda uses the number 0800 054 2979 and this matches 0870 034 2979 (presumably its old number). The options are the same as those on the MAC numbers ending 2999: 1. Track an order 2. Online query 3. Exchange or refund

Options are the same with Crème de la Mer which gives 0800 054 2661 on its website and this matches 0870 034 2661.

And the same for Estée Lauder, 0800 054 2444 and 0870 034 2444.

Bobbi Brown still promotes 0870 034 2988 on its website, but 0800 054 2988 gets to the same IVR.

I suggested that it might be the case that 0870 034 6xxx = 020 7409 6xxx = 0800 054 6xxx. Unfortunately, it appears that 0870 034 2xxx and 0800 054 2xxx don’t map to 020 7409 2xxx.

Store Numbers

On the subject of the stores, many use 0870 192 numbers.

Here is a list of those we have, all of which remain unverified:

Aveda (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5353             020 7224 3157             London - Covent Garden (Marylebone)
Aveda (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5045             01273 720203             Brighton - Dukes Lane
MAC Cosmetics (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5269             029 2064 0690             Cardiff - The Capitol Shopping Centre
MAC Cosmetics (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5165             020 7937 3738             Kensington High Street
MAC Cosmetics (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5555             020 7534 9222             London - West Soho (Fouberts Place)
MAC Cosmetics (Estée Lauder Companies)       0870 192 5195             020 7349 0022             Chelsea - Kings Road

It’s worth remembering that where a geographic number hasn’t been published, then we’re not going to find it by looking (on the internet).

If head office won’t give out such a number, then perhaps staff in the branch you’re looking for a number for can do or maybe ringing one of the other stores will yield it.

Liz3, if you do try one of the above store numbers, then do let me know if you get through to that store. If you do, then I can promoted its entry to the verified listings.

Similarly, if you find a number for the branch you are looking for, then please post it here. What is the address of the branch you are looking for an alternative for?

Thank you, Dave for that. I called the Kensington store, which does have a geographical number, to ask for their Liverpool store number. She said that all the stores now only have 0870 numbers recorded for the other stores, and unless someone 'in store' had an old email tel directory with the old telephone numbers on, she would not be able to locate a geographical number. She kindly went off to look for me, but could only find an email directory back to 2009, which contained only 0870 numbers. She said that the numbers all changed a few years ago and probably, no-one would have any records of the old numbers.

She suggested that I call the Liverpool store and ask them to call me back, which I did - and they did call me back and sorted out what I needed to sort out! The initial call took just under a minute. The member of staff in Liverpool said that she knew that the 0870 number was a 'problem', when I asked if she could give me an 0151 number for her store, stating (as the staff member in London did) that there were only 0870 numbers for the stores outside London.

So - what a nuisance if you want to call  Mac cosmetics store! Can any pressure be brought to bar on ELC Ltd to give out alternative numbers for their stores?

Thanks again.

Sorry, it was the Chelsea number I called, not Kensington.

Thanks Liz, I've promoted the Chelsea number to the verified listings.

As for Liverpool branch, I got the address from the MAC website:

MAC
Unit 22, The Met Quarter
34 Whitechapel
Liverpool, L1 6DA
0870 192 5050

I came across this page which gives "Guess" in Unit 22, The Met Quarter, 43 Whitechapel, telephone 0151 231 1888 which is now not recognised.

I then found this article from the Liverpool Echo, published in October 2008 which said that Guess closed down. I assume that they're the same Unit 22, even though the address number is 34 versus 43.

Other pages show Hamilton's Restaurant is on 1st Floor in Unit 22.

So if the 2009 really has only 0870 numbers, then perhaps the 0151 number for this branch has never been made public.  Undecided

Anyway, at least you got the issue resolved.

I think these companies will only start to change when pressure becomes so great. We don't appear to have reached that point yet; even public sector organisations like JobCentre Plus and HMRC continue to rip-off citizens with 0845 numbers, although a few have moved to 03 numbers.

There is now no benefit for companies using 0870 numbers; the premium is retained by the caller's telephone provider. BT and TalkTalk no longer charge a premium for 0870 calls; shamefully the mobile companies still do.
