Are any 0870 Numbers free?
Dec 17th, 2004 at 8:28pm

Hello there,

New to this site, really value what you're doing.

Can any 0870 number be free? I was given this info below when I needed to contact "betfair" (notice the 0870 number is marked free)

Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Batfink

The simple answer to your enquiry is NO, they are not FREE as it says. MAJOR typo by the web designer there. I talked to the helpdesk and the boss said he would have words as he agreed with me it was likely to attract unwanted attention from Trading Standards !!  Lips Sealed

As far as I'm aware, there are Telco plans that allow 0870 in the free minutes (most don't!) as well as Mobiles (Orange?) that you also let you call them.

Others with these plans may be able to help further.   Roll Eyes

And, having just tried to add a couple of Friends and Family numbers into my BT billing I am told that 0870 and 0871 are

"We're sorry, Premium rate numbers are not eligible for Friends & Family. You can enter UK, mobile or international numbers. Please try again."

They do allow 0845 at the moment...

Thanks for the replies,

I thought it seemed a bit fishy,

or am I being cynical in suggesting they would 'encourage' people to ring on the 0870 number???

It must be breaking some sort of code of conduct, if not the law, to give a misleading price for a call like that.

At least the geographical alternative is given as the international number: 020 7074 7272. This will be free for people on certain calling plans.

Yeah that was the number I called them on anyways, and it worked fine. Still, at the very least "cheeky" of them.

Yes, it is: s.20 of the Consumer Protection Act 1987, and also the DTI's Code of Practice on Price Indications (1988) which provides guidance on the above legislation.  The legislation is enforced by trading standards.
